Relief of symptoms such as allergic rhinitis and chronic urticaria
This medication is used to relieve uncomfortable symptoms caused by seasonal or perennial allergic rhinitis. It also alleviates symptoms in patients with chronic idiopathic urticaria, and helps relieve symptoms in the treatment of dermatitis and eczema accompanied by itching when used in conjunction with hydrocortisone topicals. Thus, it effectively improves symptoms caused by various allergic and skin diseases.
Adults: 1 tablet (5mg of levocetirizine hydrochloride) orally once daily, regardless of meals, with appropriate adjustments according to age and symptoms. In patients with kidney impairment, dosage should be adjusted based on kidney function (creatinine clearance (CLCR (ml/min))). - Mild impairment (50 ≤ CLCR < 80): 1 tablet once daily - Moderate impairment (30 ≤ CLCR < 50): 1 tablet every other day -
Children aged 6 years and older: 1 tablet (5mg of levocetirizine hydrochloride) orally once daily, regardless of meals, with appropriate adjustments according to age and symptoms.
This medication should not be used by patients with hypersensitivity to certain ingredients or allergies to hydroxyzine or piperazine derivatives. It should also not be administered to patients with severely impaired kidney function or those on dialysis. It is advisable for pregnant or potentially pregnant women, as well as nursing mothers, to avoid using this medication. It should not be used in infants under 1 year of age, and it is better to use liquid formulations instead of tablets for children under 6 years old. The tablet contains lactose, hence patients with lactose intolerance or related genetic disorders should not take this medication. Caution is advised for patients with impaired kidney or liver function, and also in the elderly, as the blood concentration of this medication may increase. While taking this medication, symptoms such as drowsiness, headache, dizziness, and fatigue may occur. Gastrointestinal symptoms may include dry mouth, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. There could also be an increase or irregularity in heart rate, and blood-related adverse reactions have been reported infrequently. Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, or swelling may occur. Visual disturbances or redness of the eyes may also arise. Liver and kidney function test results may temporarily rise, so regular tests might be necessary. Drowsiness or fatigue may occur after taking this medication, so caution is advised when driving or operating machinery. It is best to avoid combining with alcohol or other medications that affect the central nervous system, as this may worsen symptoms. Patients at risk of urinary retention should be particularly careful. Taking this medication with food may slow absorption, but it does not significantly affect its efficacy. It is safer for pregnant or nursing women to avoid using this medication due to insufficient research. It should not be used in infants under 1 year old, and doses for children under 12 should be determined carefully. The elderly may retain the drug longer due to decreased kidney function, so lower doses should be started, and their condition should be monitored closely. It is recommended to temporarily stop taking this medication before allergy testing, as it could influence test results. In the case of overdose, symptoms such as drowsiness or anxiety may occur. There are no specific antidotes, so it is crucial to receive treatment according to symptoms. This medication is not easily removed during blood dialysis, thus specialized treatment is needed in case of overdose.
