This medication helps prevent the onset of asthma and manage asthma consistently. It is also used to relieve the symptoms of seasonal or perennial allergic rhinitis.

How to take

Adult dose

This medicine is to be taken once daily; asthma patients should take it in the evening, while allergic rhinitis patients should adjust the timing based on their condition. Patients with both asthma and allergic rhinitis should take one tablet in the evening once a day. Adults and adolescents aged 15 years and older should take 10 mg of montelukast orally once a day.

Precautions

This medicine contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, and should not be used by patients with phenylketonuria, a genetic disorder that requires limiting phenylalanine intake. The daily intake of aspartame contained in this medicine should be adjusted to below the WHO recommended level and should not exceed 2.4 grams per day for adults. Individuals allergic to this medicine or its ingredients should not take it, and patients with lactose intolerance or certain genetic lactose decomposition disorders should avoid it as well. This medicine is not for treating acute asthma attacks, so appropriate emergency medication must be on hand during acute symptoms. Inhaled corticosteroid preparations should not be suddenly discontinued or replaced with this drug; dosages should be adjusted gradually under medical supervision. During treatment, unusual reactions such as dizziness, headache, abdominal pain, or rash may occur; if symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare professional. Especially among asthma patients, rare but serious symptoms such as eosinophilia and vasculitis may occur, so if breathing difficulties, skin rashes, or cardiac symptoms arise, inform a doctor immediately. Patients with hypersensitivity to aspirin or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should avoid those medications while taking this drug, and it is not certain whether this drug can treat bronchoconstriction caused by such medications. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, there is insufficient data on the safety of this medication, so it should only be taken after consulting a physician. For children, safety and efficacy may vary with age, thus the use of this drug is particularly not recommended for infants under 6 months old. Due to its sensitivity to light, the medicine should be opened just before use and taken as soon as prepared; it should be stored out of reach of children. While taking this medicine, do not arbitrarily reduce or discontinue the dosage of other asthma treatments without a doctor's guidance; if symptoms worsen or unusual reactions occur, consult a healthcare professional immediately. In case of overdose, as there is no specific antidote, general symptomatic treatment and clinical observation are required, and immediate hospital visit is necessary if severe symptoms occur.
