Treatment for mydriasis and cycloplegia
This medication is used to dilate the pupil or temporarily paralyze the eye muscles for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. This aids in the smooth diagnosis or treatment of ophthalmic diseases.
For mydriasis, instill 1-2 drops at a time. Alternatively, instill 1 drop twice at intervals of 3-5 minutes. For cycloplegia, instill 1 drop twice to three times at intervals of 3-5 minutes.
This medication should not be used in patients with glaucoma or those with narrow anterior chambers of the eye. Administering this drug to such patients may cause a sudden increase in intraocular pressure and result in an acute glaucoma attack. Additionally, individuals allergic to the components of this drug must never use it. Caution is essential with children as systemic side effects may be more pronounced. Especially in premature infants, serious symptoms such as bradycardia or apnea may occur, so close monitoring is required during administration. Patients with heart-related conditions such as hypertension, arteriosclerosis, or heart failure, as well as those with diabetes or hyperthyroidism, should exercise caution when using this medication. If allergic reactions such as skin rash, itching, or hives occur while using this drug, usage should be stopped immediately. Also, since symptoms like eye congestion, swelling, excessive discharge, or corneal damage may arise, consulting a doctor if these symptoms appear is necessary. Rarely, systemic symptoms such as thirst, nausea, vomiting, flushing of the face, or rapid heartbeat may occur. In such cases, discontinue use and visit a hospital. This medication may significantly dilate the eye or temporarily paralyze the accommodation function, so it is advisable to avoid driving or operating hazardous machinery after use. Moreover, wearing sunglasses is recommended to avoid direct exposure to strong light or sunlight. Especially, patients taking MAO inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants for depression should be extremely careful, as blood pressure may spike suddenly when using this medication. When administering drops, lie down and lift the eyelid to ensure the medication goes into the eye properly. After instillation, close your eyes and press on the area around the tear duct with your finger to prevent the medication from leaking out. Maintain cleanliness to prevent the medication bottle opening from coming into contact with your eyes or hands, and do not use discolored or precipitated medications. Additionally, avoid sharing with others to reduce infection risk. Store the medication in a sealed container to protect it from air and moisture, ideally at room temperature between 1 to 30 degrees Celsius.
