Prevention of zinc deficiency and improvement of nutritional status
Patients receiving Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) may have a zinc deficiency; therefore, zinc supplementation is necessary. Zinc supports immune function, promotes wound healing, and plays an important role in growth and development. Thus, appropriate zinc supplementation during TPN is used to improve nutritional status and prevent complications.
Metabolically stable TPN patients: 2.5 to 4 mg/day Adults with fluid loss from the intestine: additional 12.2 mg/L (amount of fluid loss) or additional 17.1 mg/kg (excretion rate) Acute burn conditions: 4.5 to 6 mg/day To be used as prescribed by a doctor, adjusting the dosage based on plasma trace element levels.
Children under 5 years: 100 ug/kg/day Premature infants weighing less than 3 kg: 300 ug/kg/day
This medication should not be injected directly into peripheral veins without dilution as it may cause phlebitis, and zinc carries a risk of kidney damage. Therefore, it must be diluted before administration. The zinc content is so low that severe toxicity symptoms from this medication seldom occur. When mixing this medication into a TPN solution, it is advisable to work in a sterile environment to maintain aseptic conditions. Parenteral medications must be visually inspected for any precipitate or discoloration before administration. Administering zinc together with copper can lower the blood copper levels, so it is important to regularly check zinc and copper levels to establish a dosing plan. Zinc is primarily excreted through the intestines and kidneys, so caution is required for patients with issues in these organs, as zinc may accumulate in the body. For women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, safety has not been established, so this medication should be administered cautiously only when the benefits outweigh the risks. Zinc can cross the placenta and may be present in breast milk; therefore, pregnant or lactating women should consult a doctor. In case of overdose, symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, dizziness, abdominal pain, drowsiness, and ataxia may occur, and severe cases can be fatal. Calcium intake may help reduce the toxicity of zinc. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored in its original packaging in a dry place at room temperature. Since it contains no preservatives, any unused medication must be disposed of properly.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a sealed container to avoid contact with air. It is important to maintain a storage temperature between 1 degree and 30 degrees Celsius. This will help to maintain the effectiveness and safety of the medication.
