Improvement of symptoms of Alzheimer's-type dementia
This medication is used for the treatment of symptoms of Alzheimer's-type dementia.
As donepezil hydrochloride, administer 5 mg once daily before bedtime. If unusual dreams, nightmares, or sleep disturbances occur, consider morning dosing of this medication. The concentration of donepezil reaches a steady state 15 days after administration, and the frequency of adverse reactions can be influenced by the dose escalation rate, so maintain a dose of 5 mg for 4 to 6 weeks. After evaluating the clinical response during this period, the dose may be increased to 10 mg. If increasing to 10 mg daily, pay close attention to gastrointestinal adverse reactions during administration. Discontinuation of this medication may gradually reduce effectiveness, although rebound effects due to sudden withdrawal will not occur. ○ Underweight female patients over 85 years: careful monitoring is needed due to a higher incidence of adverse reactions. Underweight elderly women should not exceed 5 mg daily. ○ Pediatric patients: there is no experience regarding the use in children.
There is no experience regarding the use in children.
This medication contains donepezil hydrochloride as its active ingredient and is primarily used for the treatment of symptoms of Alzheimer's-type dementia. This medication should not be administered to certain patients. For example, individuals allergic to this medication or its components, pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, and patients with lactose intolerance or certain genetic problems should not use this medication. Additionally, patients with heart disease or a history of gastric ulcers, those with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, patients with extrapyramidal disorders such as Parkinson's disease, and those who have allergic reactions to the yellow dye included in this medication should use it with caution. This medication can slow the heart rate or cause arrhythmias, so patients with heart conditions need special attention. Since it can affect the digestive system and exacerbate gastric ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding, patients with a history of peptic ulcers or those taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should monitor their symptoms closely. Patients with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease may experience worsened bronchoconstriction, necessitating caution to avoid exacerbation of symptoms. This medication may worsen symptoms of neurological disorders such as epilepsy or Parkinson's disease. Caution is also needed if there is a hypersensitivity reaction to the yellow dye No. 5 included in this medication. During treatment, various adverse reactions such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, insomnia, muscle pain, and symptoms related to heart irregularities may occur, so if these symptoms arise, immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is advised. In severe cases, symptoms such as fainting, heart block, liver dysfunction, cerebrovascular disorders, and severe movement disorders may occur, necessitating caution. This medication is not recommended for use in pregnant or breastfeeding women and should be used cautiously even when necessary, under the direction of a specialist. Also, safety for children has not been established, so it is not used in pediatric patients. This medication may affect liver and kidney function, so regular check-ups may be necessary. In case of overdose, serious side effects may occur, requiring immediate professional treatment. This medication can interact with other drugs, so if other medications are being taken, it is essential to inform healthcare professionals. Particular caution is needed when used with heart medications, antidepressants, antibiotics, and anti-inflammatory drugs. This medication requires caution when driving or operating machinery due to possible fatigue or dizziness.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
