Efficacy & effects

Improvement in blood pressure control in essential hypertension

  • Essential hypertension
View approved original text

Amlodipine or Olmesartan Medoxomil is used for the treatment of essential hypertension. These medications help lower blood pressure when adequate control is not achieved alone. Managing hypertension reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke. Continuous use and treatment are important depending on the patient's condition. This enables stable blood pressure regulation.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn when taken during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. Patients with allergies to any component of this medication, severely impaired liver function, nursing women, patients undergoing renal dialysis, and those with certain cardiac diseases should not take this medication. When this medication is used for the first time in patients with low fluid or sodium levels, blood pressure may drop too low, so their condition should be monitored closely. Due to its vasodilating effects, patients with severe aortic stenosis, obstructive coronary artery disease, or heart failure should exercise caution when taking this medication. Patients with reduced kidney function may experience worsening kidney function with this medication, so regular kidney function tests are necessary. Patients with impaired liver function should also exercise caution when taking this medication, and dosage adjustment may be necessary. Side effects such as dizziness, headache, hypotension, nausea, swelling, and others may occur during the use of this medication, so any unusual symptoms should be reported to healthcare providers. If blood pressure drops too low, the patient should rest lying down, and if necessary, receive IV fluids in a hospital. This medication may interact with other drugs, so it is essential to inform the doctor or pharmacist about any other medications being taken. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should choose other treatment options with proven safety instead of this medication, and they should stop taking it immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. Nursing mothers are advised to discontinue nursing or medication since this drug can transfer through breast milk. Children under 18 years of age should not use this medication due to lack of established safety and efficacy. Elderly patients should start with a lower dose considering the possibility of impaired liver and kidney function and should be closely monitored. In case of overdose, severe hypotension and cardiac function issues may occur due to vascular dilation, so immediate medical attention is required.
