Prevention of asthma and relief of allergic rhinitis symptoms
This medication helps to prevent and treat asthma. It is also used to alleviate seasonal or persistent allergic rhinitis symptoms throughout the year.
For adults and adolescents aged 15 years and older, take 10 mg of montelukast orally once daily. This medication should be taken once daily; asthma patients should take it in the evening, while allergy rhinitis patients' dosing time can be adjusted based on the patient's condition. Patients with both asthma and allergic rhinitis should take 1 tablet, 1 sachet, or 1 strip in the evening once daily.
For children aged 6 to 14 years, take 5 mg of montelukast once daily, chewed or placed on the tongue to dissolve or be absorbed without water. This medication should be taken 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals.
This medicine contains the artificial sweetener aspartame, which requires metabolism of phenylalanine in the body. Therefore, it should not be administered to patients with phenylketonuria, a genetic disorder. The amount of aspartame in this medicine is regulated to be below the WHO recommended level, with a maximum daily dose for adults being 2.4 grams. Patients who have had allergic reactions to this medication or its components should not take it. Additionally, this medication contains lactose, so patients with lactose intolerance, galactose intolerance, genetic lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take it. This medication is used to treat asthma or allergic rhinitis and is not a treatment for acute asthma attacks; therefore, separate emergency medications should be prepared for emergencies. During use, various adverse reactions such as fatigue, headache, abdominal pain, cough, and rash may occur; if symptoms worsen or unusual changes arise, consult a doctor immediately. Particularly, systemic eosinophilia-related vasculitis symptoms may occur rarely, so if symptoms such as eosinophilia, skin rash, or worsening pulmonary symptoms appear, notify a healthcare professional immediately. This medication can be used with other asthma treatments, but inhaled or oral corticosteroids should not be suddenly discontinued or substituted. Patients with aspirin hypersensitivity should not take aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs during the use of this medication. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should consult a doctor before taking this medication and should only use it when necessary. Pediatric patients aged 6 months and older can use this medication, and safety and efficacy have been confirmed for various age groups; however, safety has not been established for children under 6 months old. In the case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so general symptomatic relief treatment should be followed as directed by a doctor. This medication is sensitive to light, so it is advisable to open it just before taking it and to store it in a place out of reach of children. When taking, it should be taken consistently every day as directed by a doctor, and if symptoms worsen or an emergency arises, contact healthcare professionals immediately.
