This medication is used to more effectively control blood pressure in hypertensive patients where blood pressure is not adequately controlled with monotherapy.

How to take

Adult dose

The usual dose of this medication is 50 mg of losartan potassium/12.5 mg of hydrochlorothiazide once daily (1 tablet). Dosages exceeding 100 mg of losartan potassium/25 mg of hydrochlorothiazide per day are not recommended. Patients whose blood pressure is not controlled with monotherapy of losartan or hydrochlorothiazide should start treatment with 50 mg of losartan potassium/12.5 mg of hydrochlorothiazide once daily (1 tablet).

Child dose

There is no experience with the use of this combination of losartan and hydrochlorothiazide in children and adolescents, therefore it should not be administered to them.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus if taken during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, so it should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. This medication should not be administered to patients with certain allergic reactions, severely impaired kidney function, severely compromised liver function, or pregnant women. Patients with excessively low blood pressure, problems with renal blood vessels, liver disease, electrolyte imbalances, or elderly patients should use this medication with caution. During treatment, various side effects such as dizziness, cough, skin rash, and muscle pain may occur, most of which are temporary and mild, but if symptoms are severe, consultation with a physician is advised. This medication may alter serum potassium levels, thus it may be dangerous to take with potassium supplements or other medications containing potassium; it is essential to consult a doctor before doing so. The hydrochlorothiazide component can cause electrolyte imbalances, so regular blood tests are necessary, and if symptoms of dehydration or electrolyte abnormalities occur, they should be reported immediately. This medication may react sensitively to sunlight, increasing the risk of skin cancer; therefore, it’s important to avoid sun exposure and periodically check skin condition. Caution is needed when driving or operating machinery as dizziness or drowsiness may occur. It is advisable to avoid grapefruit juice while taking this medication, and to inform your doctor of all other medications you are taking, as interactions may occur. Women who may become pregnant should check their pregnancy status before taking this medication, and those planning a pregnancy should consult their doctor. There is no experience with children and adolescents, so it is safest not to administer this medication to them. This medication should be stored in its original container out of reach of children and should not be transferred to another container.

Serious side effects

Hives, severe swelling (edema), tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing, cold sweat, pallor, severe rash accompanied by high fever, blisters, skin peeling, pain in mouth/eye mucosa, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, asthma attack, respiratory distress with cough and fever, jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes), extreme fatigue, sudden and severe headache, thunderclap headache, seizures, confusion, visual disturbances, paralysis, urination issues.

Mild side effects

Abdominal pain, swelling, palpitations, back pain, dizziness, cough, sinusitis, upper respiratory infection, weakness/fatigue, diarrhea, nausea, headache, bronchitis, pharyngitis, chest pain, facial swelling, fever, orthostatic hypotension, fainting, angina, arrhythmias (atrial fibrillation, sinus bradycardia, tachycardia, ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation), cerebrovascular accident, hypotension, myocardial infarction, secondary AV block, loss of appetite, constipation, toothache, dry mouth, dyspepsia, flatulence, gastritis, vomiting.

Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.

Storage

This medication is sensitive to light and should be stored in a container that prevents light exposure. Additionally, it should be kept in a location that avoids excessively hot or cold temperatures, ideally at room temperature between 1°C and 30°C.
