This medication is used for the treatment of various gastrointestinal diseases, including gastric and duodenal ulcers. It alleviates the symptoms of erosive or ulcerative gastroesophageal reflux disease and is effective for long-term maintenance therapy of gastroesophageal reflux disease. It also increases treatment efficacy when administered along with antibiotics to gastric ulcer patients infected with Helicobacter pylori. It is also used for disorders related to excessive gastric acid secretion, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. This drug helps in the relief and treatment of symptoms of gastrointestinal diseases.

How to take

Adult dose

For gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers: 10 mg orally once daily; may administer up to 20 mg once daily depending on symptoms. For erosive or ulcerative gastroesophageal reflux disease: 10 mg or 20 mg once daily for 4–8 weeks. If symptoms persist, may administer 10 mg or 20 mg orally twice daily for 8 weeks. Precautions

This medication should not be used by patients with allergies to certain ingredients or benzimidazoles. Patients who are allergic to antibiotics such as amoxicillin or clarithromycin should not take this medication when used in conjunction for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori. Patients currently taking certain heart-related medications (terfenadine, cisapride, pimodizole, astemizole) or atazanavir and rilpivirine should also avoid using this medication. This medication is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Patients with impaired liver function, elderly patients, and those with a history of drug allergies must take this medication cautiously. This medication can cause allergic reactions such as skin rashes, itching, and hives, and should be discontinued immediately if these symptoms occur. Regular blood tests are required as red or white blood cell counts may change. Periodic liver function tests are recommended since liver dysfunctions may occur. Be cautious as heart-related symptoms and changes in blood pressure may occur. Various gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting may occur. Neurologic symptoms such as headache, insomnia, dizziness, and anxiety may also be experienced. Respiratory symptoms such as cough and difficulty breathing have been reported infrequently. Musculoskeletal symptoms such as myalgia or arthralgia may occur as well. Severe skin reactions may appear, including rashes, hair loss, or in severe cases, Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Eye-related symptoms may include visual disturbances or eye pain, and these should be reported if they occur. Urological symptoms such as difficulty urinating or hematuria may appear. Long-term use of this medication may increase the risk of fractures, so caution is advised. Hypomagnesemia may occur, so regular monitoring of magnesium levels is necessary during prolonged use or when taken with specific medications. This medication inhibits gastric acid secretion, which may slightly increase the risk of bacterial infection in the gastrointestinal tract. Be cautious when driving or operating machinery, as drowsiness may occur. There may be interactions with other medications, so consult with a physician if taking medications like warfarin or methotrexate. This medication should be swallowed whole and not chewed or crushed, and it should be stored out of reach of children. It should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and elderly patients or those with reduced liver function should be well monitored while taking it. There is no specific antidote for overdose, so appropriate treatment should be received based on symptoms.
