Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, improvement of hypercholesterolemia
This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It particularly reduces the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular surgeries, and angina in adults with risk factors for coronary heart disease and patients with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, it is used to lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglyceride levels in patients with hyperlipidemia and to increase HDL cholesterol. It is also effective in managing cholesterol levels in pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. Thus, this medication is widely utilized for improving cardiovascular diseases and hyperlipidemia.
The recommended initial dose for the treatment of hyperlipidemia is 10 mg once daily. If a greater reduction in LDL cholesterol is needed, treatment can be initiated with 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. The dose range is 10-80 mg once daily. Lipid levels should be analyzed and the dose adjusted within 2-4 weeks of initiation of treatment. For patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, the dose is 10 mg- once daily.
The recommended initial dose for pediatric patients (10-17 years) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg once daily, and the recommended maximum dose is 20 mg once daily. Dosage adjustments should occur at intervals of at least 4 weeks based on individual patient's needs.

Women who are pregnant, possibly pregnant, or breastfeeding should not take this medication. Children under the age of 10 should not take this medication, and children aged 10 to 17 should use it cautiously under a doctor's supervision. This medication has many drug interactions, so caution is necessary when taken with specific antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals, some cholesterol-lowering agents, and grapefruit juice. Elderly patients or those with decreased kidney function are at higher risk for serious side effects like myopathy or rhabdomyolysis, so they should be particularly careful when taking it. If symptoms such as muscle pain, weakness, fever, or malaise occur while taking this medication, you must inform your doctor immediately, and if needed, tests should be conducted to check for muscle damage. It is important to avoid alcohol intake while taking this medication and to regularly monitor liver and muscle health.
