This medication is used in conjunction with diet control and exercise therapy to help patients with type 2 diabetes control their blood glucose levels. It can be used alone or in combination with other medications to enhance therapeutic effects. Through this, it helps improve blood sugar levels and aids in diabetes management.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

The recommended dose of this medication is 25 mg once daily. It can be administered regardless of meals. In patients with renal impairment, mild (creatinine clearance ≥ 50 mL/min) does not require dose adjustment. Moderate (creatinine clearance 30 ≤ ~ < 50 mL/min) patients should take 12.5 mg once a day. Severe (creatinine clearance < 30 mL/min) or patients with end-stage renal disease who require dialysis.

Precautions

This medication is used for the treatment of diabetes and should not be administered to certain patients. For example, it is not suitable for patients who are allergic to any of its components, those with type 1 diabetes, or those who are in diabetic ketoacidosis or coma. Additionally, it is advisable not to use this medication in patients with severe infections, pre or post-surgery, or those with major injuries who require insulin therapy. This medication should be used with caution in patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, heart failure, those taking sulfonylureas, patients with impaired pituitary or adrenal function, those with poor nutritional status or irregular dietary intake, individuals who engage in vigorous exercise, or those who consume excessive alcohol. While taking this medication, symptoms such as headaches, upper respiratory infections, and nasopharyngitis may occur, and in rare cases, pancreatitis or allergic reactions may develop. If there is suspicion of pancreatitis symptoms, immediately stop taking the medication and consult a physician. Hypoglycemic symptoms may appear, so when taking it with insulin or other hypoglycemic agents, blood sugar should be closely monitored. During the course of treatment with this medication, liver function abnormalities may occur. If symptoms such as fatigue, loss of appetite, or jaundice appear, immediately inform medical personnel and it is recommended to undergo liver function tests. It is recommended that pregnant or breastfeeding women do not take this medication. Safety in children has not been established, and elderly patients may require dose adjustments based on renal function. In the event of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so appropriate treatment and monitoring are necessary depending on the symptoms, and some removal may occur through hemodialysis although the effect is limited. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and kept in its original container to prevent misuse or deterioration of quality.
