This medication is used to treat osteoporosis occurring in postmenopausal women. The reduction of female hormones due to menopause can lead to weakened bones, and this drug helps increase bone density and reduce the risk of fractures. Therefore, it helps alleviate symptoms related to osteoporosis and maintain healthy bones.

How to take

Adult dose

Take 1 tablet regularly once a month in the morning at least 1 hour before food, beverages (excluding water), or other oral medications or dietary supplements (including calcium). This medication should be swallowed with a sufficient amount of water (180-240 mL) while standing or sitting upright, and lying down should be avoided for 60 minutes after taking the drug. Mineral water may reduce the absorption of this drug.

Child dose

Efficacy and safety in children under 18 years have not been studied.

Precautions

This medication should not be administered to certain patients. For example, patients who are allergic to this medication or its components, patients with untreated hypocalcemia, patients who cannot sit or stand upright for more than 60 minutes, patients with esophageal function issues that hinder proper passage of food, and patients with lactose intolerance or certain genetic problems should not use this. This medication should be used cautiously in patients with significantly impaired kidney function, and expert judgment is needed in such cases. Some patients using this medication may experience side effects such as dyspepsia, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, headache, muscle pain, joint pain, and rash; most side effects are mild or moderate, and discontinuation of treatment has not been necessary. Rarely, symptoms such as esophagitis, esophageal ulcers, dizziness, angioedema, facial swelling, and hives may occur, so any unusual symptoms should be immediately consulted with medical staff. This medication may be associated with serious side effects such as inflammation of the eyes or osteonecrosis of the jaw and surrounding bones, so if there are any unusual symptoms in the eyes or if pain occurs in the jaw area, medical staff should be informed promptly. Before taking this medicine, metabolic abnormalities such as hypocalcemia should be treated, and sufficient calcium and vitamin D intake are necessary. Moreover, patients with esophageal or gastrointestinal issues should exercise caution when taking this medication; if they experience difficulty swallowing, chest pain, or heartburn, they should stop taking it immediately and consult a physician. This medication may hinder absorption if taken with food or medications containing calcium, aluminum, magnesium, or iron, so it is advised to avoid consuming other foods or medications for at least 1 hour after taking it. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised not to use this medication, and no special dosage adjustments are necessary for children or the elderly. In case of overdose, gastrointestinal disturbances or hypocalcemia may occur, so do not induce vomiting and ensure that the patient is kept sitting or standing, as dialysis is not effective. Lastly, this medication should be stored out of the reach of children, and any unused medication should be disposed of properly to prevent environmental contamination.
