Treatment of hypertension and kidney disease (in patients with type 2 diabetes)
This medication is used to treat hypertension. Additionally, in patients with type 2 diabetes who have accompanying hypertension, this drug helps delay the progression of kidney disease and protects kidney function. Therefore, it is used in the treatment to reduce cardiovascular risks associated with hypertension and to maintain kidney health.
It is recommended that this medication be taken at the same time every day, regardless of meals. The initial and maintenance dose for adults with hypertension is recommended to be 50 mg orally once daily as losartan potassium. If the treatment effect is insufficient, the dosage can be increased up to 100 mg once daily or split into two doses daily. For elderly patients aged 75 years or younger, no initial dose adjustment is necessary; for those aged 75 years or older, it is recommended to start with 25 mg once daily.
For children and adolescents aged 6 years and older weighing between 20 kg and 50 kg, take 25 mg once daily, with a maximum increase to 50 mg once daily possible. For those weighing 50 kg or more, it is typically 1
This drug can cause serious harm to the fetus if taken during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, so women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take it. It should not be administered to patients with severe liver or kidney impairment, certain genetic conditions, or a history of specific types of angioedema. Elderly patients, patients with high serum potassium levels, and those with heart or vascular problems should use this drug with extra caution, and blood pressure or kidney function should be regularly monitored. This drug may cause side effects such as muscle cramps, dizziness, cough, and upper respiratory infections, and serious side effects such as angioedema, liver dysfunction, and renal failure can occur rarely. If blood pressure drops too low or kidney function worsens, medical advice should be sought immediately, and if abnormal symptoms appear during medication, it should be stopped and appropriate treatment should be sought. This drug may interact with other antihypertensive medications, potassium supplements, and certain diuretics, so it should only be taken after consulting a doctor or pharmacist. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take this drug, and if pregnancy is planned or confirmed, medication should be stopped immediately and medical advice should be sought. This drug should not be administered to children, especially those under 6 years old, or to children with severely decreased kidney function. Care should be taken during driving or operating machinery, as dizziness or drowsiness may occur during the course of taking this medication. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension and bradycardia may appear, so if symptoms occur, seek treatment at a hospital immediately. The medication should be stored in a safe place out of reach of children and should not be transferred to another container.
