Improvement of Selenium Deficiency
This injection is used to provide selenium to patients who have a deficiency that cannot be adequately replenished by general nutritional supplementation. Selenium plays an important antioxidant role in our body and helps support immune function. This medication effectively treats deficiency states by delivering selenium directly through injection. It improves symptoms related to selenium deficiency and contributes to the restoration of normal bodily functions, thus it is actively used in the treatment of patients with selenium deficiency.
Administer 100 μg of selenium by intramuscular or intravenous injection per day. If necessary, the dose may be increased up to 200 μg per day. When administered additionally to the basic injection of total parenteral nutrition (TPN), the daily dosage should be 100 μg of selenium.
This medication contains selenium, and should not be used in patients with selenium toxicity. Patients with allergic reactions to this medication or any of its components should also not receive it. Rarely, pain or allergic reactions may occur at the injection site. If symptoms like dermatitis, unpleasant odors during sweating or breathing, hair loss, anxiety, or vomiting occur, use should be discontinued immediately. Care should be taken to avoid precipitation when mixing with other intravenous fluids, and if the solution's acidity (pH) is too low or used with reducing agents like vitamin C, selenium may precipitate and not be absorbed in the body. If any precipitation or color change is observed after mixing, do not use. This medication contains sodium, so patients requiring a low-sodium diet should consider this. The safety of this medication has not been sufficiently established in pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, so it should only be used when the therapeutic benefits outweigh the risks. Lactating women should also consider discontinuing breastfeeding or the medication because safety has not been established. In case of overdose, garlic breath may be noticed along with fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, and prolonged excessive use may affect nail and hair growth and cause peripheral nerve damage. In cases of overdose, measures such as gastric lavage, induced urination, and administration of high-dose vitamin C may be necessary, and in severe cases, dialysis may be needed to remove selenium.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a sealed container to prevent exposure to air or light, ideally in a cool, dry place between 15 to 25 degrees Celsius.
