Efficacy & effects

Short-term weight loss adjunct therapy for obesity (including risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes)

  • Obesity
View approved original text

This medication is used for patients with initial obesity for whom weight loss is difficult through suitable dietary or exercise regimens. It is particularly helpful for patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or those with a BMI of 27 or higher who have risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or hyperlipidemia. This drug is used as a short-term adjunct therapy for the treatment of exogenous obesity based on calorie restriction for weight loss. However, it must be taken alone and not in combination with other appetite suppressants to be effective and safe. Since the body mass index is calculated based on height and weight, it is important to set weight loss goals tailored to the individual. This medication helps improve obesity and supports healthy weight management.

How to take

Adult dose

For phendimetrazine tartrate, 35 mg should be taken orally 2 to 3 times a day 1 hour before meals. The dosage should use the minimum effective dose but should be adjusted individually to obtain an appropriate response. In some patients, 17.5 mg once a day may be suitable. Precautions

This medication must only be used alone, and only for a short period of time, as using it in combination with other appetite suppressants can lead to serious heart issues. It may increase the risk of a rare cardiovascular disease known as pulmonary arterial hypertension, so if symptoms like difficulty breathing, chest pain, or fainting occur, use should be stopped immediately, and medical attention should be sought. There may be risks associated with heart valve disease, so it is advisable to undergo tests to check heart status before using this drug. This medication should not be given to individuals with certain health conditions, such as heart disease, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, mental instability, or a history of substance abuse. It should not be used by women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, and caution is advised for nursing mothers. This drug can affect the central nervous system and may cause symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia, and dizziness, so caution should be taken when driving or operating dangerous machinery. Diabetic patients may need to adjust their insulin dosage while taking this medication, so consultation with healthcare professionals is required. In case of overdose, severe symptoms such as extreme anxiety, coma, seizures, and abnormal blood pressure can occur, and immediate emergency treatment is necessary. This drug may lead to dependency, so patients should not abruptly discontinue high-dose use after a long period but should taper off gradually under medical supervision. Lastly, it is important to keep this medication out of the reach of children.
