Hypertension refers to a condition where blood pressure is consistently high, and this drug is used to treat hypertension itself. Furthermore, it is used in patients with type 2 diabetes experiencing kidney disease to help prevent the deterioration of kidney function and control blood pressure. Therefore, this drug is effective in treating hypertension and its complications, especially kidney disease in diabetic patients.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication can be taken regardless of meals, but it is recommended to take it at the same time daily. For adults with hypertension, the initial and maintenance dose is recommended to be 50 mg orally once a day in the form of Losartan Potassium. The maximum blood pressure-lowering effect is seen 3 to 6 weeks after the start of treatment. If the treatment effect is insufficient, the same dose may be divided and taken twice daily, or dosage may be increased to a maximum of 100 mg once daily if necessary.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus if taken during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, so it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. It is safer for women who may become pregnant to avoid taking this medication. Patients with allergic reactions to this drug, severely impaired liver function, or a history of angioedema should not take it. Patients with certain genetic disorders such as galactose intolerance should also avoid this medication. Elderly patients or those with poor kidney function or at risk for hyperkalemia should use the medication cautiously. As this drug has a blood pressure-lowering effect, caution is needed as dizziness or hypotension symptoms may occur during treatment. Blood pressure, kidney function, electrolyte levels, etc., should be regularly checked while taking this medication to identify any abnormalities. Avoid using this medication in combination with potassium-sparing diuretics or potassium supplements as it may dangerously elevate potassium levels in the blood. Caution is necessary when used in combination with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as it may reduce blood pressure control effect and increase the risk of kidney function deterioration. This drug can also cause severe side effects such as liver dysfunction, hepatitis, or renal failure, so consult a physician immediately upon experiencing symptoms. Possible side effects during treatment include cough, headache, dizziness, muscle pain, and if serious allergic reactions or angioedema occur, discontinue use immediately. This medication is not recommended for children under 6 years of age, or those with heavily impaired kidney function as safety and effectiveness have not been established. While taking this medication, it is advisable to avoid drinking grapefruit juice, and pregnant or breastfeeding women should refrain from using it. In the case of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension and bradycardia may occur, so immediate medical treatment is required, and this medication cannot be removed through blood dialysis. Store this medication out of reach of children and do not transfer it to another container for safety.

Hives, severe swelling (edema), angioedema (swelling of larynx/glottis which may cause airway obstruction, swelling of face/lips/pharynx/tongue), tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing, cold sweat, pallor, severe rashes with high fever, blisters, skin peeling, painful mouth/eye mucosa, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, asthma attacks, abnormal respiratory symptoms accompanying cough and fever, yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice), and severe general malaise.
