Efficacy & effects

Improvement in Type 2 Diabetes (blood sugar control)

  • Blood sugar control disorders in patients with Type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used in conjunction with dietary and exercise therapy to help control blood sugar levels in patients with Type 2 diabetes. It can be used alone, but in cases where blood sugar control is inadequate with other hypoglycemic agents, it is administered in combination with sulfonylurea, metformin, or insulin. For patients with Type 2 diabetes, nutritional counseling, weight loss, and exercise therapy are essential, which are very important not only for initial treatment but also for maintaining the effectiveness of medication. Therefore, this medication is effectively used to improve blood sugar control.

How to take

This medication is taken orally once daily regardless of meals. Initially, 15 mg once daily as monotherapy is recommended, and it may be increased to 30 mg once daily as needed. For combination therapy, 15 mg once daily is also administered. The maximum recommended dose is 30 mg once daily.

Precautions

This medication aids blood sugar control in Type 2 diabetes patients and works by improving insulin resistance. When taking this medication, there is a risk of heart failure occurring or worsening in patients with compromised heart function, so symptoms such as changes in weight, shortness of breath, and swelling should be carefully monitored after treatment initiation. Patients with heart failure or a history of heart failure should not take this medication, and careful administration is necessary for patients with existing heart disease or a high risk of heart failure. This medication can cause fluid retention, leading to swelling, which may exacerbate heart failure symptoms, so immediate consultation with medical personnel is advised if symptoms occur. Additionally, patients with a history of bladder cancer or current active bladder cancer should not take this medication. If symptoms such as urinary disturbances or hematuria occur, inform a physician immediately. Patients with poor liver function or severe kidney impairment should also use this medication with caution, and liver enzyme levels should be monitored regularly. This medication carries a risk of hypoglycemia, so caution is necessary when taken with insulin or other hypoglycemic agents, and dosage adjustments of the concomitant medication may be required if hypoglycemic symptoms occur. In premenopausal women, this medication may promote ovulation, increasing the likelihood of pregnancy, so it is important to use appropriate contraceptive methods. Elderly patients or those in poor nutritional status, as well as those engaging in vigorous exercise, are also at risk of hypoglycemia and should use caution when taking this medication. During treatment, regular blood sugar and liver function tests should be conducted, and any abnormal symptoms should be reported to medical personnel immediately. Overdose may not produce specific symptoms, but tailored treatment may be necessary based on symptoms, so caution is needed. Finally, the safety and efficacy of this medication have not been established for children and it is not recommended for use in this age group.
