Adjunctive treatment for weight loss in obese patients (high body mass index)
This medication is used as an adjunct to calorie restriction for patients with early obesity (body mass index 30 kg/m² or greater) or for those who are obese with risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or hyperlipidemia (BMI 27 kg/m² or greater) who find it difficult to lose weight through proper dietary and exercise regimens. It should be prescribed alone without the use of other appetite suppressants and is intended for short-term treatment of exogenous obesity. This can help reduce health risks associated with obesity.
Adult: As Phendimetrazine Tartrate, take 35 mg orally 2 to 3 times a day, 1 hour before meals. The dose should be adjusted individually to use the minimum effective dose while achieving appropriate response. In some patients, a total daily dose of 17.5 mg once a day may be appropriate. The single dose should not exceed 70 mg taken more than 3 times a day. This medication is prescribed for short-term use (within 4 weeks).
This medication should be used alone for a short period only, as its use with other appetite suppressants may result in serious heart problems. The combined use of this medication with other weight loss drugs is not recommended due to unconfirmed safety and efficacy. Long-term use of this medication may rarely lead to a severe lung condition known as pulmonary hypertension; therefore, if symptoms such as difficulty breathing or chest pain occur, the medication should be stopped immediately and medical advice should be sought. It is important to examine heart conditions before using this medication as it may be related to valvular heart disease; patients with heart problems should avoid using it. This medication should not be administered to patients with specific heart diseases, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, anxiety disorders, and a history of substance abuse. It should not be used in children under 16 years old, or in pregnant women or those who may become pregnant. This medication contains lactose, so patients with lactose intolerance should not take it. Patients with mild hypertension, nursing mothers, and diabetics need to exercise caution when using this medication, and diabetics may need to adjust their insulin dosage. Potential side effects include increased heart rate, anxiety, dizziness, insomnia, dry mouth, indigestion, hives, and more. If the appetite-suppressing effect decreases, do not increase the dose; instead, discontinue use and exercise caution when driving or operating machinery. This medication may affect blood pressure, so interactions with other drugs should be monitored. It is safest for pregnant or breastfeeding women not to use this medication, and caution is advised while nursing. In cases of overdose, serious symptoms such as anxiety, coma, seizures, and cardiac arrhythmias may occur, so immediate medical attention is required. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and is classified as a controlled substance with potential for abuse, so it should be used according to a doctor's guidance. Abrupt discontinuation after prolonged high-dose use may result in severe fatigue and depression, so it is recommended to taper off.
Hives, peripheral edema, exercise-induced dyspnea, symptoms suggestive of pulmonary hypertension (angina symptoms, fainting), symptoms related to valvular heart disease, mental disturbances (schizophrenia-like psychosis), extreme fatigue, depression, severe skin disorders, seizures, coma, and death in cases of severe overdose
