  • Obesity
View approved original text

This medication is used for patients with obesity who do not respond to dietary and exercise regimens for weight loss. It is particularly effective for those with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m2 or higher, or a BMI of 27 kg/m2 or higher with risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, or dyslipidemia. This drug is utilized as a short-term adjunctive treatment for exogenous obesity that involves calorie intake restriction. It is important to use this medication alone without combining it with other appetite suppressants. It is used to assist with weight loss and improve health risks associated with obesity.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in conjunction with other appetite suppressants, as it can lead to severe heart problems. It should only be used alone for short-term weight control and is not safe when combined with other weight loss medications. Long-term use of this medication can significantly increase the risk of serious diseases such as pulmonary arterial hypertension, so if breathing difficulties or heart-related symptoms occur, it should be discontinued immediately and an examination should be conducted. There is also a risk of heart diseases such as valvular heart disease, so it is advisable to consider a heart examination before starting the medication, and those with pre-existing heart issues should avoid using it. This medication should not be administered to patients with certain conditions or those taking specific medications, and caution is particularly warranted in cases of heart disease, hypertension, hyperthyroidism, glaucoma, or mental anxiety. It is prohibited for use in individuals under the age of 16 or pregnant women. As this medication acts on the central nervous system, care should be taken when driving or operating machinery, and diabetic patients may need to adjust their insulin dosage. Abrupt discontinuation after long-term high-dose use can lead to severe fatigue and depression, so it should be tapered off gradually. In cases of overdose, serious symptoms such as anxiety, coma, or seizures may occur, requiring immediate emergency treatment. It should be stored out of reach of children and is classified as a controlled substance, so it should be used according to the physician's prescription and instruction. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not use this medication, as the risks to the fetus may be harmful. Caution is also necessary during breastfeeding, as the medication may be transmitted through breast milk. This medication has not established safety and efficacy in pediatric patients under 16 years old, so its use is not recommended.
