This medication acts as an antacid to relieve symptoms caused by gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastritis, and excessive gastric acid. It also helps improve symptoms of constipation, thus can be used for both gastrointestinal issues and treatment of constipation.
1) Gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastritis, excessive gastric acid: Administer magnesium oxide; 0.5-1g daily, divided into several doses orally. 2) Constipation: 2g daily, divided into 1-2 doses orally. However, start with a minimum amount and adjust while monitoring stool condition.
This medication should not be used by patients with kidney dysfunction as it can lead to elevated magnesium levels in the body. Patients with diarrhea should also avoid this medication as it may worsen diarrhea. Caution is advised for patients with heart problems, those with hypermagnesemia, and elderly individuals over 65 years of age, as this medication can affect magnesium levels in the body. If dizziness, a slower pulse, severe drowsiness, confusion, shortness of breath, muscle weakness, dry mouth, or vomiting occurs after taking the medication, it should be immediately discontinued and a doctor or pharmacist consulted. In case of magnesium toxicity, potassium salt injections may be necessary. This medication can interfere with the absorption of certain antibiotics such as tetracycline, so it is not advisable to take them together. Furthermore, as this medication can alter the intestinal environment, it may affect the absorption or excretion of other drugs and should be used cautiously. Taking it with milk or calcium products may result in milk-alkali syndrome, so symptoms should be monitored, and use should be discontinued if abnormalities occur. Lastly, this medication can absorb moisture and carbon dioxide from the air, so it is important to store it in a cool, dry, and tightly sealed place.
