This medication is used for the treatment and prevention of herpes simplex virus infections that may occur initially in the genital area and for recurring skin and mucosal herpes simplex virus infections. It is also effective in treating shingles virus infections and is particularly helpful in alleviating pain during the acute phase. However, the effectiveness for postherpetic neuralgia has not yet been definitively proven. This medication can also be used to treat chickenpox in children over 2 years of age. Overall, it plays a crucial role in the treatment and prevention of viral infections.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients who are allergic to this drug or any of its components. Caution is necessary when administering to patients with poor kidney function, as neurological side effects may occur. It should be used with caution in patients with impaired liver function, as the risk of worsening liver function exists. Special care should be taken when using it in infants and children, and it should only be used when absolutely necessary if safety has not been established. In elderly patients, the drug concentration may increase due to impaired kidney function, making side effects more likely, so dosages and intervals should be carefully adjusted. Severe allergic reactions such as anaphylactic shock can rarely occur, so if symptoms such as decreased blood pressure, difficulty breathing, or chest tightness arise, drug administration must be discontinued immediately, and appropriate treatment should be sought. Skin reactions such as rashes, fever, blisters, or urticarial eruptions can occur, and if such symptoms develop, the use of the drug should be discontinued, and medical consultation should be sought. Serious skin conditions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis can rarely occur, so careful observation of skin condition is important. Neurological side effects can manifest as disturbances of consciousness, confusion, hallucinations, seizures, drowsiness, and anxiety, particularly in elderly patients or those with renal impairment. Renal abnormalities including diminished kidney function, hematuria, and proteinuria may develop, so it is important to periodically monitor kidney status. Blood abnormalities such as leukopenia, anemia, and bleeding may occur, so regular blood tests are needed to check the condition. Liver-related side effects such as liver dysfunction, jaundice, or hepatitis may occur, thus liver function tests may be required. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as gastritis, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain may arise, and if these symptoms persist, drug use should be discontinued and medical consultation sought. Systemic symptoms such as fever, muscle weakness, malaise, and headache may occur, so observation of condition is critical. Arthralgia or myalgia may also occur. Cardiac-related side effects such as arrhythmia, chest pain, or blood pressure changes may rarely appear, requiring vigilance. Dysuria or urinary retention may rarely occur. Adequate hydration is necessary during the use of this medication, and especially with high doses, sufficient water should be consumed to prevent dehydration and reduce the risk of nephrotoxicity. It is effective to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear, preferably within 5 days for shingles and within 3 days for chickenpox. Patients with compromised immune function may require treatment in the form of intravenous injections. When driving a car or operating dangerous machinery, caution should be exercised considering the potential side effects of altered consciousness or drowsiness. When used in conjunction with certain drugs, the drug concentration may change, or the risk of side effects may increase, so it is essential to inform the healthcare provider of any other medications being taken. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should carefully weigh the benefits and risks of using this medication, and it is advisable to discontinue breastfeeding as the drug may be transferred into breast milk. In case of overdose, severe neurological abnormalities, renal failure, etc., might occur, and immediate medical attention is necessary.
