  • Encephalopathy due to chronic liver disease
View approved original text

This medication is used to improve symptoms of encephalopathy occurring due to chronic liver disease. It helps to relieve neurological symptoms caused by liver dysfunction, thereby enhancing the patient's quality of life. Regular use can help prevent the worsening of symptoms and maintain a healthy state.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

Typically, administer 500 mL via drip infusion per dose. The infusion rate is based on 180 minutes or longer per 500 mL for adults. For central venous administration, mix 500 mL of this medication with glucose solutions, and continuously administer via central venous route over 24 hours. Adjust according to age, symptoms, and body weight.

Precautions

This medication must be taken strictly according to a doctor's instructions and should not be taken or discontinued arbitrarily. This medication should not be administered to patients with severe renal dysfunction or hypernitrogenemia. Caution should also be exercised for patients with metabolic disorders not related to liver dysfunction. Patients with metabolic disorders involving nitrogen utilization issues, congestive heart failure, pulmonary edema, and very low or absent urine output should not use this medication. This medication contains sodium or chloride ions and should not be administered to patients with hypernatremia, hyperchloremia, or alkalosis. If magnesium ions are included, caution is required for patients with atrioventricular block or severe myasthenia. Administration should be avoided in patients who may be at risk of excessive fluid supply or have a history of myocardial infarction. It should be used with caution in patients with severe acidosis, congestive heart failure, severe heart failure, swelling due to sodium retention, hyperkalemia, or potassium retention. This medication contains sodium bisulfite, which can cause allergic reactions, especially in asthma patients, thereby increasing the risk of asthma attacks. While using this medication, rare hypersensitivity reactions such as skin rashes may occur; if any unusual symptoms appear, administration should be stopped immediately. Gastrointestinal issues such as nausea or vomiting can occur, while cardiovascular issues can include chest discomfort, palpitations, rapid heartbeat, and increased blood pressure. Rapid administration in large volumes may result in acidosis, so care should be taken with the rate and volume of administration. Additionally, chills, fever, headache, difficulty breathing, shock, bronchospasm, and urinary tract spasm may occur; immediate consultation with healthcare personnel is advised in case of unusual symptoms. If magnesium ions are included, peripheral vasodilation may occur, requiring caution. Metabolic complications may include metabolic acidosis, hypophosphatemia, alkalosis, hyperglycemia, diabetes, dehydration, hypoglycemia, elevated liver enzymes, vitamin imbalance, and electrolyte imbalance. Patients with reduced liver or kidney function may experience an increase in blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels, necessitating regular monitoring. Patients with severely impaired liver function may display serum amino acid imbalance, metabolic alkalosis, systemic nitrogen retention, hyperammonemia, or coma, requiring caution. Since this medication contains electrolytes, special attention should be paid to electrolyte balance during large-volume administration or when used alongside electrolyte solutions. Rapid intravenous injection may lead to chills or vomiting, and amino acids may be significantly excreted through the kidneys, so slow administration is advised. This medication should be matched to the temperature of the body for use, and aseptic conditions must be maintained during preparation and management of injections to minimize infection risk. Residual liquid or opaque solutions should not be used; it should be administered promptly after mixing and used within 24 hours if refrigerated. The safety of this medication during pregnancy has not been established; it should only be administered when the therapeutic benefits outweigh the risks. When administered to children, caution should be taken to maintain low concentrations as liver function may be immature, and blood ammonia levels should be monitored frequently. Elderly patients may have decreased physiological function, so the speed and dosage of administration should be adjusted accordingly. This medication can interact with specific drugs, so it is crucial to inform healthcare providers if other medications are being taken. During storage, do not open the packaging, and do not use if there are abnormalities in the solution or if the packaging is damaged. Always follow the instructions of healthcare professionals when using this medication, and consult healthcare providers immediately in case of adverse reactions.
