How it is given

Adult administration

Typically, 20-1,000 mL of sodium chloride is administered subcutaneously, intravenously, via drip infusion, or rectally. The dosage and infusion rate should be appropriately adjusted according to age, weight, and symptoms.

Precautions

This medication should be opened carefully as broken glass may mix into the injection container. Extra caution is required when used for children and the elderly. This medication should not be used in patients with high serum sodium levels, excessive body fluid, or ascites due to liver cirrhosis. Patients with weak heart or cardiovascular function, diminished kidney function, low protein levels in blood, abnormal serum sodium or potassium levels, peripheral or pulmonary edema, patients with preeclampsia during pregnancy, certain hormonal abnormalities, and special caution is needed when using this medication in children or elderly. Administering this medication in large amounts or too quickly can burden the heart or cause issues such as edema, acidosis, and electrolyte abnormalities. Additionally, inflammation or pain at the injection site, thrombosis, etc., may occur; if adverse reactions appear, administration should be immediately stopped, and appropriate treatment should be sought. During the use of this medication, the patient's fluid status and electrolyte levels, as well as acid-base balance, should be regularly monitored to ensure there are no abnormalities. Caution should be exercised when using this medication on pregnant or nursing women, women of childbearing age, neonates, infants, children, and the elderly. Especially, the containers for this medication are made of plastic material containing DEHP, which has been reported to affect reproductive system development in animal studies. However, the actual risk during use is very low, making it safer to use this medication. Elderly patients may have reduced body functions, so the rate of administration should be slow and the dosage should be adjusted. Children may have decreased ability to regulate fluids and electrolytes, so serum electrolyte levels should be closely monitored. Administering this medication to patients with acute fluid deficiency may cause hyponatremia, which can lead to severe symptoms like headache, nausea, seizures, coma, and brain edema, thus should be considered an emergency. When preparing this medication, ensure it mixes well with the diluent, and always check for color changes or precipitates before administration. Also, the patient's skin should be thoroughly disinfected to prevent infection before administration, and it should be warmed to body temperature on cold days. Any remaining medication after opening or adding other medications should be discarded immediately. When administering, it should be infused slowly to minimize the occurrence of side effects.
