Definition

Anxiety disorder is a collective term for mental illnesses characterized by various forms of abnormal and pathological anxiety and fear that cause impairment in daily life. Anxiety and fear serve as warning signals of imminent danger and are normal emotional responses; however, when excessive, they make appropriate coping with situations more difficult and induce mental distress and physical symptoms. When anxiety excites the sympathetic nervous system, physical symptoms such as headaches, increased heart rate, increased respiration, and gastrointestinal disturbances may occur, causing discomfort. If anxiety, worry, or physical symptoms interfere with daily activities such as work, interpersonal relationships, or studies, it can be diagnosed as an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders include various diagnoses, each with specific definitions and diagnostic criteria.

Anxiety disorders occur due to various causes, and most are difficult to prevent. However, it is necessary to regulate and manage stress through relaxation techniques such as rest, hobbies, and deep breathing.

Diet and Lifestyle Guide

It is important to understand and support patients who are anxious. Additionally, it is not advisable to blindly expose or let patients encounter factors that cause anxiety. Considering the patient's condition, it is preferable to adjust the exposure stages to anxiety-inducing factors according to the psychiatrist's prescription and to learn coping methods.

There are no specific foods that particularly help alleviate anxiety disorders. SometimesPanic DisorderIf a patient consumes foods containing caffeine, such as coffee or chocolate, and experiences symptoms like changes in heart rate, they are advised to avoid these foods. However, if the patient desires these foods, it is recommended to consult with a psychiatrist for adjustment. Some patients may drink alcohol to manage anxiety, but this habit is not advisable as it can lead to other mental disorders such as alcohol abuse and dependence, as well as physical illnesses like liver disease.
