▲ Short sleep duration

 

When sleep duration is short, the secretion of the hunger hormone ghrelin increases, and the secretion of the appetite-suppressing hormone leptin decreases. In simple terms, people with insufficient sleep are more likely to be at risk of overeating and binge eating. The psychological tendency to compensate for fatigue caused by lack of sleep with a temporary alertness effect through high-calorie food intake also becomes stronger.

 

▲ Fast eating speed

 

It takes about 20 minutes for our brain to send satiety signals during a meal. Therefore, if you finish eating within 20 minutes, you may feel that your hunger has not been satisfied even during the meal, leading to overeating beyond your needs. The faster you eat, the easier it is to swallow food hastily without proper chewing, which increases the risk of indigestion, constipation, and other issues.

 

▲ Insufficient fluid intake

 

Our bodies easily confuse hunger with thirst because both are regulated by the hypothalamus in our brain. People who drink less water are more likely to repeatedly overeat or binge due to so-called 'false hunger.' Therefore, those starting a diet should regularly consume a certain amount of water regardless of whether they feel thirsty to avoid dehydration.

Even when sleep is insufficient, it can disrupt the secretion of appetite-regulating hormones, increasing the risk of overeating. As expected, I also haven't been getting enough sleep, but I should try to increase my sleep duration.
