Reduction of risk of myocardial infarction and stroke and improvement of hyperlipidemia
This medication helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It particularly decreases the risks of myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular surgeries, and angina in adult patients with multiple risk factors. It is also effective in lowering the risks of such cardiovascular diseases in some patients with type 2 diabetes. In patients with confirmed coronary heart disease, it reduces the risks of myocardial infarction and stroke, as well as decreases hospitalization due to congestive heart failure and the occurrence of angina. In addition, this medication is used for the treatment of hyperlipidemia. It lowers cholesterol levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and dyslipidemia, while increasing HDL cholesterol levels to improve cardiovascular health. It is also beneficial for patients with dyslipidemia and elevated triglycerides who do not respond to dietary changes. In summary, this medication is used to improve the risks of cardiovascular diseases and hyperlipidemia.
The recommended initial dose of atorvastatin is 10 mg once daily, and if greater reduction in LDL cholesterol is needed, it can be started at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily.
