This medication is used to treat hypertension and malignant hypertension, as well as cardiac edema due to congestive heart failure, renal and hepatic edema, and edema caused by premenstrual tension or corticosteroids, phenylbutazone, and estrogen. It is effective in improving these various edemas and blood pressure-related problems.
Dosage
1. Edema: Administer hydrochlorothiazide orally at a dose of 25-100 mg once daily, 1-2 times. 2. Hypertension: Administer 25-50 mg daily, divided into 1-2 doses. 3. Premenstrual tension: Administer 25-50 mg once daily, 1-2 times. Doses should be adjusted according to age and symptoms.
Precautions
This drug should not be used in patients with severe liver dysfunction or severely impaired kidney function. Furthermore, patients who have anuria and do not produce any urine or patients with very low blood sodium and potassium levels should not take this medication. Patients with an allergy to sulfonamide drugs or those with Addison's disease and hypercalcemia should also avoid this drug. Individuals with lactose intolerance or certain genetic metabolic disorders should refrain from taking this medication due to the lactose content. Patients on long-term therapy with this drug or those with liver function issues must be monitored closely, and patients with advanced liver cirrhosis should use it cautiously due to the risk of severe brain dysfunction. Patients with severe cardiovascular diseases should be cautious, as rapid diuresis can cause blood concentration that increases the risk of thrombosis. This drug may increase the risk of skin cancer, so sun exposure should be limited, and if any skin abnormalities occur, a doctor should be consulted immediately. While taking this medication, electrolyte imbalance, changes in blood glucose and uric acid levels should be monitored regularly, and dosage adjustment or discontinuation may be needed if any abnormal symptoms arise. Dizziness or drowsiness may occur, so it is advisable to avoid driving or operating dangerous machinery. If acute eye pain or vision loss occurs, discontinue use immediately and inform healthcare personnel. Rarely, respiratory issues such as pneumonia or pulmonary edema may occur, so prompt treatment should be sought if respiratory distress arises. This drug may interact with several other medications, so if other drugs are being taken, it is essential to inform a doctor or pharmacist. In the later stages of pregnancy, caution should be taken regarding its effects on the fetus and mother, and during breastfeeding, it should be avoided if possible as it may interfere with milk supply. Infants and the elderly are at higher risk for electrolyte imbalance, so special care is required, and the elderly should start at a low dose and be monitored closely. Finally, to avoid nighttime urinary frequency, it is advised to take this medication in the morning.
