Skin elasticity test

This is a test to check the time it takes for the skin to return to its original position after being pinched and lifted with the thumb and index finger.

It is also called the pinch test (pinch, finger pinching).

First, pinch the skin for 3 to 5 seconds and then release your hand. Then, measure the time it takes for the skin to return to normal. If the body has sufficient moisture, the skin will return to its original state within 1 to 2 seconds.

On the other hand, if the skin elasticity decreases due to dehydration, it takes longer than 2 seconds to return to its original state. After drinking enough water and trying pinching again, you can see the return process speed up. The element that connects the fibers inside the skin, which determine skin elasticity like collagen, is water. Therefore, if the body lacks moisture, collagen also becomes deficient, leading to decreased skin elasticity.

Additionally, our body sends various signals when it is dehydrated. ▲When the color of urine becomes cloudy ▲When the frequency and amount of urination decrease compared to usual ▲When urination does not feel refreshing, dehydration should be suspected. Also, ▲persistent fatigue that does not improve, dizziness, or ▲bad breath caused by insufficient saliva secretion are symptoms that appear when the body lacks fluids.

Especially during weather with persistent heat like these days, the body's hydration can easily become insufficient. At such times, it is important to drink water frequently. To maintain the body's water balance, it is recommended to consume at least 2 liters of water per day. However, drinking a large amount of water all at once is not advisable. Rapidly lowering the concentration of blood can rarely cause brain swelling. Consequently, if the respiratory center is pressed, there is a risk of water intoxication symptoms, such as difficulty breathing. When feeling thirsty, it is best to avoid drinking coffee, carbonated drinks, or alcohol. Caffeinated beverages like coffee or beer promote diuretic effects, which can actually lead to increased water loss from the body.
