Do I only apply anesthetic cream before the Volneumer procedure?

I heard that Volneumer is a high-frequency procedure that causes a sensation of heat, and since I tend to be a bit of a scaredy-cat, I am most worried about the level of pain.
If I apply numbing cream thoroughly before the procedure, is it tolerable without significant pain?
I am curious to hear reviews from those who have personally experienced how much stimulation there is compared to Denserty or other radiofrequency procedures.
