Is presbyopia correction necessary?

I met a friend whose vision had worsened, and he used thick glasses, but he said he had cataract surgery... He came out without glasses and with good eyesight, and I was momentarily surprised, wondering who he was. Seeing him read the newspaper in old age without reading glasses, I was shocked. Is this called age-related vision correction?
