When is the best time to have cataract surgery?

My father has cataracts, so his vision has slightly deteriorated and he feels a bit blurry. He has been prescribed eye drops to use. They said the eye drops won't cure it but will slow down the progression. They also mentioned that it will progress gradually anyway...

They said to go ahead with the surgery if it becomes more uncomfortable. For now, it doesn't significantly interfere with daily life. I found out that during the surgery, an artificial lens is inserted, and it's said to be used permanently.

Will the surgical risk increase if I decide to do it later when I am older?

I'm debating whether to wait and see if it doesn't cause immediate discomfort or to just go ahead and do what needs to be done anyway.
