Why do varicose vein diseases occur?

Looking into it, varicose veins seem to be a type of vascular disease and are progressive. Will it improve with treatment and management? Is it treatable?

It would be good to prevent varicose veins early through self-diagnosis. Sometimes I wake up startled because of leg cramps in the early morning, which happens once every few months. Is this also dangerous?
