How to distance yourself from alcohol🤔🤔.. Abstain completely at once VS gradually drink less

 

Many people decide to abstain from alcohol for the New Year. Learn about the changes that occur in the body when you stop drinking.

 

◇Gradually reduce drinking frequency

Many people set plans such as "abstain from alcohol starting the new year" or decide to never drink alcohol all at once. However, this can actually cause stress and decrease the chances of successfully abstaining. It is better to set a period and gradually reduce drinking frequency. Try setting short-term goals and gradually extending the period. If you decide not to drink for just one day, and then extend that period to a week, a month, and so on, you can increase your success rate in abstaining from alcohol. It is also important to replace drinking with hobbies such as exercise or cultural activities. Especially for those who habitually drink alcohol in stressful situations, it is necessary to find other healthy ways to relieve stress that can be enjoyed instead of alcohol.

This week is also helpful for weight loss because alcohol subtly has a high calorie content. According to the Korean Dietetic Association, one shot of soju (50mL) contains 71kcal, one glass of draft beer (475mL) 176kcal, one shot of vodka (50mL) 120kcal, and one glass of makgeolli (200mL) 92kcal. Even the lowest-calorie soju, when consumed in a bottle (360mL), exceeds 500kcal. Of course, not all of these calories are converted into fat and stored in the body. However, alcohol inhibits the oxidation of dietary fats, which can lead to increased fat storage from other food intake.

 

◇Cognitive function enhancement

Alcohol also affects brain functions, including memory and cognitive abilities. Abstaining from alcohol for a month improves cognitive functions such as memory, attention, and problem-solving skills.

 

◇Skin Improvement

This week, it also helps with skin care. Alcohol absorbs moisture from the body, making the skin dry. If you do not drink alcohol, your skin will retain its moisture and be protected from ultraviolet rays, helping you maintain a lively complexion.

 

◇Enhancement of immunity

You should abstain from alcohol to strengthen your immune system. Excessive drinking fatigues the liver and lowers immunity. Alcoholic patients who only drink alcohol and do not consume proper nutrition have poor nutritional status, and their liver damage from drinking is particularly severe. Their overall immune system is compromised, leading to more frequent viral infections and more severe symptoms.
