Is there a reason why you shouldn't remove earwax?

I sometimes clean my earwax with a cotton swab. I do it before going to the beauty salon.
But recently, I felt a crackling sound in my ear, so I went to the ENT specialist, and they said that the earwax had been pushed inward. So, they removed the earwax with an aspirator and cleaned it with alcohol swabs.
I remember I should have asked the doctor at the time, but I didn't. So, should I avoid picking my earwax? Or should I occasionally go to an ENT specialist to have my ears cleaned?
