What do you do when you have vague cold symptoms?

If you take the medicine prescribed by the hospital and feel better, but then suddenly start coughing or having a runny nose again, do you go back to the hospital?
I think the symptoms are too mild to go to the hospital, and I was asked why I came when I went there before and seemed fine.
Should I just buy some medicine from the pharmacy and go to the hospital if it gets worse? Also, if you have any recommendations for over-the-counter cold medicine, please let me know.
