Why are my hands and feet swollen when I wake up in the morning?

When I wake up in the morning, my hands and feet always feel swollen, even if I don't eat or sleep. I know that eating something can cause this, but why does this happen? I wonder if it's because my kidneys are not functioning well, or if something else is wrong.
