Is there a treatment for severe chronic migraines?

My mother has been suffering from severe chronic migraines since she was young.
Over-the-counter headache medicines are no match at all.
The medication prescribed at the hospital only worked for a while; before long, resistance developed, and it no longer works well.
I also tend to get headaches frequently, probably because I resemble my mom, so I understand how painful headaches can be, and I feel very sorry... Are there anyone who has overcome chronic migraines?
