Research has shown that tea bags release a large amount of microplastics. Microplastics can potentially cause inflammatory bowel disease, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and other health issues, so caution is advised.

The New York Post reported on the 14th (local time) about microplastics found in tea bags.

According to a study conducted last year, boiling tea with plastic polypropylene tea bags releases up to 1.2 billion tiny plastic particles per milliliter.

Experts believe that microplastics have a potential link to inflammatory bowel disease, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other conditions.

However, not all tea bags are problematic. Some tea bags are made from paper or plant-based materials, but the issue is that it is not easy to determine what the tea bags are made of.

Experts advise that choosing leaf tea is better to avoid microplastics when drinking tea.

Additionally, while it may diminish the flavor of the tea, rinsing the tea bag under running water can be somewhat effective in removing plastic.

It is dangerous to heat a mug with a tea bag or to add hot water because more microplastics may be released.

On the 14th (local time), the Hong Kong South China Morning Post reported on a joint research study published in the international journal Chemosphere, which examined microplastics in tea bags based on research conducted by researchers from Barcelona Autonomous University, Sohag University in Egypt, and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research in Leipzig, Germany.

The research team concluded that when drinking tea or similar beverages using tea bags, millions of microplastics present in the tea bags can enter the human body and potentially have adverse health effects.

In particular, intestinal cells absorb a large amount of microplastics, and when they enter the intestine, there is a high likelihood of causing inflammatory bowel disease.

A study conducted last year revealed that microplastics can enter the brain and testes and be transmitted to the fetus, which was shocking.
