Foods rich in inflammatory compounds are particularly problematic. They can trigger a phenomenon known as oxidative stress, a major cause of premature aging. This can affect everything from cells and organs to skin and overall vitality. Health Digest, a health media outlet, interviewed experts and reported that simply being mindful of what you eat can slow down the aging clock.
Fried foods that cause cell damage
Frying uses oils rich in trans fats, which are known to trigger inflammatory processes in the body. "Foods fried at high temperatures can release free radicals that cause cell damage to the skin," says Dr. Troy Pittman, a plastic surgeon. "Exposure to these radicals can accelerate the aging process."
Free radicals are what cause oxidative stress in the body. Too many free radicals and not enough antioxidants to combat them can lead to excessive inflammation. "The body's stress response can lead to an avalanche of aging effects," explains registered dietitian Dr. Sarah Keasley. "If free radicals aren't controlled, the body can show signs of aging, such as wrinkles, sagging skin, fine lines, and discoloration." She adds, "This oxidative stress response doesn't just affect the skin; it can also lead to serious chronic diseases like Alzheimer's, arthritis, cataracts, and Parkinson's."
Sugar accelerates cell aging
Sugar can wreak havoc on your skin in many ways. Excessive sugar consumption can trigger a biological process called glycation, which occurs when sugar molecules attach to lipids and proteins. This creates compounds called advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which are known to dramatically alter bodily functions and increase free radicals, accelerating aging.
"If you want to slow the aging process, you can't eat foods that are traditionally high in sugar," says Dr. Race Putuck. "Donuts, in particular, are high in refined sugar, and consuming refined sugar can trigger a process in the body that breaks down collagen, accelerating the development of wrinkles." When collagen production slows, skin loses elasticity significantly, accelerating the development of wrinkles.
Alcohol accelerates the aging process
Even a glass of wine to end the day or a cocktail with dinner can accelerate the aging process. Because it's a diuretic, it dehydrates the skin. This can lead to overall dryness and loss of elasticity, making wrinkles more visible. Dr. Courtney Peritera, a researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, stated, "Studies on the aging effects of alcohol consumption and smoking have shown that the face ages more quickly than non-drinkers."
Alcohol also produces a chemical compound called acetaldehyde, which is known to have detrimental effects on DNA and the body's natural repair processes, among other things. Studies have shown that acetaldehyde can accelerate the shortening of telomeres, which protect chromosomes from aging. The longer telomeres, the better equipped chromosomes are to deal with challenges like oxidative stress. Shorter telomeres may make a person more susceptible to the natural effects of aging.
Sodium that accelerates aging
Sodium is widely known as a major cause of high blood pressure. High blood pressure can cause significant damage to the body, affecting heart and kidney health over time. Excessive sodium intake can lead to water retention, resulting in bloating and swelling. As skin retains water for extended periods, it becomes less firm and elastic.
“Consistently consuming too many high-sodium foods over a long period of time can accelerate skin aging, shorten DNA telomeres, and increase the risk of numerous chronic diseases,” says Dr. Sarah Kitley.
Highly processed foods that interrupt the cell life cycle
Most foods considered unhealthy are actually overly processed. Items like candy, pizza, chips, cakes, and sugary drinks all fall into this category and have been shown to accelerate biological aging. "Processing foods at high temperatures creates harmful compounds like acrylamide, advanced glycation end products, and trans fats, which can potentially accelerate aging," said Dr. Thomas Holland.
Added sugars, preservatives, and trans fats contribute to these detrimental effects. Dr. Sarah Ketteley explains, "These foods can actually interrupt the life cycle of cells in the body." The inflammation caused by these ingredients inhibits collagen production, weakening the skin's structural integrity and accelerating the development of fine lines and wrinkles. Furthermore, overly processed foods, lacking antioxidants, can lead to a surge in free radical production, accelerating aging in the process.
Processed meats that change your body's balance
If you enjoy hot dogs, salami, sausages, and other processed meats, be careful. Processed meats can release harmful compounds that have long-term inflammatory effects on the body. In particular, they contain sodium nitrate and other preservatives, which can promote the production of free radicals.
"Processed meats can alter the body's chemical balance. The effects on skin are remarkable," says Dr. Nadir Kazi. "Switching to leaner meats like chicken and turkey, or eating plant-based alternatives, can help protect your body from premature aging."
Dairy products that cause inflammation
While dairy products are rich in beneficial nutrients like calcium and protein, they can also promote inflammation in some people. Saturated fats in foods like cheese, butter, and cream all increase inflammatory markers in the body, ultimately leading to oxidative stress and accelerated skin cell aging.
Research suggests that oxidative stress can contribute to the skin aging process in several ways, including inhibiting collagen production, degrading elastin, limiting hyaluronic acid production, and causing dull, wrinkled skin. Consuming casein, found in milk, has also been linked to clogged pores and acne. While acne itself isn't a sign of aging, it can make skin cells more vulnerable to environmental stressors that contribute to wrinkle formation over time.
“Studies show that the standard Western diet, which consists of meat and dairy products that contain cholesterol but lack fiber, causes inflammation and accelerates skin aging,” says Dr. Jessica Krant. “If you enjoy dairy, consider replacing at least some of it with plant-based alternatives like almond or oat milk, which are fortified with essential nutrients and minerals and have excellent anti-aging properties.”
=============
Personally, I like fried food the best.
Is this a shortcut to aging?
I guess I should eat less now
Last year, I ate less flour and did well.
Starting in winter, I started eating a lot of wheat flour again.
I need to pull myself together again.
