Thought she was a ghost... Woman who sleeps 6 hours a day, her appearance after 25 years 'shocking'
It has been suggested that if we do not sleep sufficiently on a continuous basis, our bodies could change like Gollum from "The Lord of the Rings" after 25 years.
According to the New York Post on the 15th (local time), British bedding brand Benson's for Beds collaborated with sleep expert Dr. Sophie Bosstok to reveal the appearance of women who sleep an average of 6 hours a day by the year 2050.
Venson's for Beds highlights that 71% of Britons do not get the recommended 7 hours of sleep and visualizes the future of a female model named 'Hanna' who sleeps about 6 hours through digital rendering.
Hanna's posture was hunched, her hair had thinned, and her skin had aged. In particular, her physique, reminiscent of Gollum from the movie 'The Lord of the Rings,' drew attention.
Dr. Bostock said, "Hannah is an example of how sleep impacts overall health," and added, "Chronic sleep deprivation can increase the risk of diseases that affect the heart, including obesity, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes."
Specifically, Hanna experienced skin aging and hair loss due to sleep deprivation. Incorrect sleep habits caused repetitive pain in her back and shoulders, leading to a hunched posture.
Chronic sleep deprivation leads to a decrease in muscle mass, and even just a few days of sleep restriction have been shown to reduce muscle protein synthesis rates in men. Hanna also had a reduced muscle mass in her arms and legs.
However, while the arms and legs gradually became thinner, the abdomen was protruding. This was due to impaired metabolic function and the accumulation of visceral fat. The hormones responsible for hunger, leptin and ghrelin, decreased, leading to an increase in appetite.
Hannah was experiencing severe hair loss due to chronic sleep deprivation and had a weakened immune system, making her vulnerable to respiratory infections. Her skin had lost elasticity. It was especially predicted that Hannah would also develop ankle swelling, a sign of heart disease.
Lisa Richards, the Director of Marketing at Benson's for Beds, said, "Hannah predicted the worst-case scenario that can occur when all sleep-related conditions, such as bad sleep habits and environment, are wrong. We want people to think more carefully about sleep and to look at Hannah to identify signs of their current sleep deprivation."
