A study found that eating tomatoes can help prevent and manage high blood pressure.

 

A Spanish research team analyzed 7,056 adults at high risk for cardiovascular disease. Eighty-two percent of the participants had high blood pressure. Participants completed questionnaires about their lifestyle, health status, and dietary habits, including tomato consumption. Tomato consumption included raw tomatoes, tomato sauce, gazpacho, and other tomato products. The researchers categorized participants into four groups based on their tomato and tomato-based food intake: low (less than 44 g), moderate (44–82 g), moderate or higher (82–110 g), and high (more than 110 g).

The analysis results showed that people who consumed a lot of tomatoes had a 36% lower risk of developing high blood pressure than those who consumed less, and that even moderate daily consumption of tomatoes (44-82g) had the effect of lowering blood pressure.

 

The research team analyzed that the potassium found in tomatoes lowered blood pressure. Reducing sodium intake and increasing potassium intake are lifestyle changes that can lower the risk of high blood pressure. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends eating tomatoes, which are high in potassium, to prevent high blood pressure.

 

In addition to potassium, tomatoes are a good source of lycopene, a carotenoid with numerous cardiovascular health benefits, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiplatelet effects.

 

The research team recommended including tomatoes in the diet and maintaining a balanced diet with whole grains, legumes, and healthy fats to maintain heart health.

 

Eating a variety of high-potassium foods can help you meet your potassium needs while also consuming vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. However, people with kidney disease should be cautious about their potassium intake as they are at increased risk for hyperkalemia. In these cases, they should consult with a healthcare professional or clinical nutritionist to adjust the potassium content of their diet.
