It's persimmon season. Sweet persimmons, from sweet persimmons to dried persimmons, delight the palate. However, excessive consumption of persimmons can be harmful.

First, let's look at the health benefits of persimmons.

 

Persimmons are rich in vitamins A and C, which help boost immunity and maintain eye health. They also contain beta-carotene, which has excellent anti-cancer properties, helping prevent aging and lung cancer.

 

If the persimmon is not fully ripe, it will taste bitter. This is due to its tannin content. Consuming too much tannin can cause water retention, disrupting bowel movements and causing constipation. If taken on an empty stomach, it may combine with stomach acid and form bezoars.

However, tannin isn't necessarily harmful. It offers numerous health benefits. Tannin, an antioxidant, is known to help prevent diseases like cancer, high blood pressure, and stroke by eliminating free radicals and eliminating neutral fat and cholesterol from the body. Tannin also delays alcohol absorption, removes toxins from the stomach, and quenches thirst, making it useful for relieving hangovers.

 

If you already suffer from constipation, eating ripe persimmons can help. Fully ripe persimmons are low in tannin and rich in dietary fiber, helping to stimulate bowel movements. However, because persimmons also contain small amounts of tannin, limit yourself to one or two.

 

Meanwhile, stomach cancer patients should be cautious about eating persimmons. Professor Song Kyo-young, a surgeon at Seoul St. Mary's Hospital, said in a past interview with Health Chosun, "I don't recommend persimmons for stomach cancer patients." He added, "Eating persimmons can cause a buildup of sticky substances in the stomach, which is detrimental to health. Research has shown this." He continued, "Even if you don't have stomach cancer, people with poor stomach function should avoid eating persimmons."

    옛날부터 변비끼가 있는 사람은 감을 먹지 말라고 하시더라구요.. 먹어도 조금만 먹으라고.. 역시 다 이유가 있었군요.... 위에는 최악이라니.. 정말 무섭군요
