With the sudden cold weather, more and more people are suffering from colds. When our body temperature drops, blood vessels constrict and heat is produced to maintain a constant body temperature. If this function is impaired, hypothermia can occur, leading to loss of consciousness and, in severe cases, death. Let's explore ways to maintain body temperature in our daily lives.

 

Controlling body temperature with food

 

Ginger, garlic, onions, ginseng, jujubes, and burdock are representative foods that raise our body temperature. When you feel cold, drink ginger or ginseng tea to warm yourself up. Cold weather often leads to frequent bathroom visits, so it's important to replenish your fluids. Make a conscious effort to drink warm tea or water.

 

Drinking alcohol when it's cold is absolutely forbidden.

 

Western films often depict people warming themselves up by drinking vodka or other alcoholic beverages during the cold winter. However, this is a mistake. Some people drink alcohol because they're cold, but this actually dilates blood vessels, increasing heat loss and making it easier for body temperature to drop. This explains the high number of deaths from drinking in winter. Drinking alcohol in cold weather, taking off your clothes while intoxicated, or spending time on the street are absolutely forbidden. Trying to warm yourself up with alcohol is a life-threatening act, so be careful.


Light physical activity and exposure to sunlight

 

The colder it gets, the more we tend to curl up. However, reducing activity levels is not good for maintaining body temperature. Light walking, jogging, and stretching are recommended to loosen muscles that are tense from the cold and to improve breathing and circulation. Furthermore, the reduced sunlight in winter can increase the incidence of seasonal affective disorder. Light exercise and exposure to sunlight during this time are ideal for maintaining body temperature. Furthermore, it stimulates vitamin D synthesis and hormone secretion, which can alleviate seasonal affective disorder. Even if it's cold, instead of curling up, take about 20 minutes a day to take a walk and engage in photosynthesis between noon and 2 p.m., when sunlight is at its peak.

 

Wear several layers of thin clothing to stay warm

 

In the past, "underwear" was a winter essential for adults. These days, various types of lightweight undergarments, known as Heattech, are available. Wearing multiple thin layers is more effective than wearing a single thick garment to maintain body temperature. Furthermore, when you go indoors, sweat can build up, and as it dries, your body temperature can drop. Therefore, it's beneficial to wear multiple layers that can be easily removed and put on. Beyond clothing, it's also wise to utilize winter accessories like earmuffs, scarves, gloves, fur hats, and masks.

I didn't make ginger tea last year because the ginger harvest wasn't great.
