"Not all superfoods are good for you"... What should you eat when you have inflammation in your body?

Superfoods are a group of foods known to be rich in nutrients and to boost immunity. However, even healthy superfoods should be approached with caution by people with inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease.

 

When choosing a high-fiber diet to alleviate symptoms, eating superfoods rich in fiber can make digestion difficult. There are specific superfoods suitable for Crohn's disease.

 

The effect of certain foods can vary from person to person. To determine which foods alleviate or worsen your symptoms, it is advisable to try introducing one new food at a time.

 

In relation to this, we looked into foods that are good for Crohn's disease as introduced by the American health and medical media 'Everyday Health.' In addition to these foods, it is important to hydrate adequately, avoid problematic foods, and take prescribed medications to alleviate symptoms.

☆Sweet potato

Sweet potatoes are excellent sources of vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B, manganese, potassium, and amino acid tryptophan. Studies have shown that sweet potatoes are one of the three major anti-inflammatory foods beneficial for Crohn's disease patients. Purple sweet potatoes also have high levels of anthocyanins and antioxidant activity, which help prevent inflammation associated with oxidative stress. Additionally, it has been found to help maintain good bacteria in the gut.

Seaweed

Seaweed is an underrated superfood that is beneficial for inflammatory intestines. According to research, seaweed contains many nutrients that help reduce inflammation risk. Other studies have shown that seaweed helps regulate gut bacteria by promoting the growth of good bacteria and inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria.

 

☆Salmon

Many seafoods are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to have anti-inflammatory effects. Studies suggest that omega-3 fatty acids can reduce intestinal inflammation and may help alleviate symptoms in some people with ulcerative colitis. Salmon is a good source of protein and is gentle on the stomach. When cooking salmon, avoid adding fats or spices and opt for simple cooking methods whenever possible.

 

☆Berries

For patients with Crohn's disease, easily digestible fruits such as strawberries and blueberries are recommended.

These fruits help support antioxidant activity that protects cells from damage. According to research, blueberries have a high anthocyanin content that protects the body from oxidative damage and inflammation.

 

☆Soy Milk

If you have lactose deficiency, which is commonly associated with Crohn's disease, it is better to replace milk with soy milk. Soy milk contains isoflavones that help reduce inflammation. Isoflavones assist in regulating gut bacteria.

 

☆Yogurt

Yogurt is a rich source of probiotics (beneficial bacteria) and helps promote gut health.

Unlike milk and cheese, yogurt is a dairy product that people with irritable bowel syndrome can also tolerate well. The beneficial bacteria in yogurt help break down lactose, soothing the stomach. Choose yogurt that does not contain added sugar or sugar substitutes.

 

Cooked vegetables

Eating vegetables raw can worsen symptoms. If symptoms are severe, it is better to eat well-cooked vegetables. Make clear soup with low-fat broth or blend vegetables into a puree. It is best to avoid fibrous vegetables or those that produce gas.

☆Celery, broccoli, and mini cabbage are listed as foods to avoid when experiencing irritable bowel syndrome.
