Dermatologist Advice: The 3 Common Mistakes People Need to Fix
According to the British media Daily Mail on the 4th (local time), New York-born dermatologist Sherrin Idris stated on her TikTok channel that "common mistakes people make when taking care of their skin include exfoliating daily, using the same skincare routine regardless of the season, and frequently changing cosmetics." Sherrin Idris is a dermatologist and a TikToker with approximately 980,000 followers, and she is also the owner of the American skincare brand 'Dr. Idriss.' Netizens responded to this video with comments such as "The advice was very helpful" and "I changed my skincare routine according to her advice, and my skin has improved." As this dermatologist said, exfoliating daily, using the same method regardless of the season, or frequently changing cosmetics is not good for the skin. We will explore the reasons why.
▷Exfoliate daily
Frequent removal of dead skin cells can destroy the skin barrier that protects the skin from external stimuli. Therefore, exfoliation should be done when the skin becomes noticeably rough or dull. For dry or sensitive skin, once every 1-2 weeks is appropriate; for normal skin, once a week; and for oily skin, two to three times a week. Additionally, avoid exfoliants with overly harsh ingredients or abrasive effects. Removing dead skin cells too often with strong stimulation can weaken and sensitize the skin. It can also irritate the skin and cause inflammation. Excessive exfoliation can lead to skin irritation, which may result in hyperpigmentation or wrinkles.
▷Skincare routine the same way regardless of the season
Skin is not always in the same condition. In spring, as the weather warms up, outdoor activities increase, making it easy to be exposed to ultraviolet rays. Therefore, it is important to prevent pigmentation disorders such as melasma and age spots. In summer, the weather gets hotter, and skin temperature rises. Especially in midsummer, skin temperature can rise up to 43 degrees Celsius, so focus should be on managing collagen and elastic fibers. In autumn, the temperature difference between morning and evening causes the stratum corneum to thicken. Therefore, gentle cleansing to soothe the keratin and manage skin texture is important. Finally, in winter, dryness worsens, so efforts should be made to maintain moisture and hydration.
Frequently changing cosmetics
Frequently changing cosmetics can make the skin more sensitive during the adaptation process to new products. Instead of frequently switching products, it is better to understand the expiration date for each type and store them properly. The expiration date after opening is usually written on the outside of the container. There is an illustration of an open lid along with numbers and letters like ‘6M, 12M’ printed on it. If it says ‘6M,’ it means the product should be used within 6 months after opening. The expiration date varies depending on the type of cosmetic. Generally, powders or compacts last about 2 years, while cleansers and creams last about 1 year and 6 months.
▲Skin lotion and foundation last for 1 year
The essence is 8 months old.
Cosmetics used on lips or around the eyes, such as lipstick and mascara, should be used within six months.
Since most cosmetics have a shelf life of less than three years, it is best to discard products that have been opened for more than 36 months.
