Infant congenital mole removal surgery review
Hello??
I was wondering what kind of review would be helpful to post...
I thought sharing my second child's congenital mole removal surgery experience might be helpful.
I am leaving this review.
My second child had a large congenital mole on the front of his left elbow.
There were 3-4 dark spots inside the mole.
At first, I met them at the postpartum care center... I felt really sorry for the child.
And when I looked into it... this congenital mole... if it gradually increases in size over time... you should suspect malignant transformation.
In unlucky cases, 6 to 12% of large congenital moles transform into melanoma, becoming skin cancer.
Sometimes, when there is a large mole on the face... it can even invade the brain.
In the case of congenital moles, they are not inherited or anything like that.
It is said to be a case where melanocytes become moles due to heteroplasia of skin cells during fetal development.
This is a photo of a mole taken shortly after birth.
If you look at the photo, you can see a blemish inside the mole... I heard that having a blemish makes it worse.
We joined the related mole cafe and looked into it, and our couple has decided to proceed with surgery around the time our child turns one.
This is a mole that has darkened and grown larger as the child has grown over the past year.
You can really see that it has become darker and larger.
If there are no health issues... children may experience stress as they grow, but it might be okay to just leave it alone.
However... since I couldn't just leave a mole that could grow into a malignant tumor over 10%, I decided to proceed with surgery.
First, I received a mole consultation at the pediatrics department, then I visited Chungnam National University nearby, and also went to the famous Suwon Ajou University Road.
At Ajou University Hospital in Suwon, they mentioned that due to its size, 3 to 4 surgeries would be necessary.
Ajou University Hospital performs procedures under general anesthesia, so I was worried about general anesthesia for a baby who has just turned one year old.
I looked up a lot of information at the cafe, and since the final surgery mainly determines the shape of the skin scar, etc.
We have scheduled primary surgery at Dongtan Hanlim University Seongshim Hospital.
This procedure is performed under sleep and local anesthesia. However, the suturing of the wound may not be very neat.
Everyone recommends Ajou University Hospital for the last surgery.
After our second child, born in May 2017, turned one year old.
I scheduled a surgery at Dongtan Hanlim-daero in July 2018 and was hospitalized.
The mole on our cheerful second child's arm is expected to mostly disappear after the first treatment.
Taking sleeping pills and anesthesia... Mom goes into the operating room together.
Because the baby might wake up, I was holding the other hand beside me and listening to the sound of the surgery.
That time... I can't forget it...
This is our second child who recovered well from the first surgery and is now sleeping peacefully in my arms.
After surgery, I really take care to do the dressing carefully.
Since both of us work full-time, I disinfect the child's wounds every morning when sending them to daycare.
I wrapped the bandage and sent it.
If the mole is large, it is difficult to excise it all at once.
So, during your first visit to Ajou University Hospital, you also mentioned surgeries 3 and 4.
Removing the mole completely and stitching the remaining skin together, the larger it is, the more the skin is pulled.
Because the scar area becomes unsightly and there is pain from the skin being pulled.
Fortunately, the first surgery went well... and that amount of mole remains...
When I went to Ajou University Hospital a year later for the second surgery, they said everything could be removed during the second operation...
I don't know how relieved I was... The fact that my still young baby has to undergo several surgeries... I really dislike it.
And about a year later, in August 2019, I was hospitalized at Ajou University Hospital in Suwon for a second surgery.
Because I am undergoing surgery and will be under general anesthesia, they connected the IV like that in my hand.
I felt so sorry... Still, she didn't cry much and smiled brightly, our second child was so pretty...
We are now removing the mole that is almost gone.
As you can see... as the child grows, their skin also develops...
The surgical scar between the well-stitched moles will open up.
Therefore, large moles cannot be removed all at once.
After the surgery... this time, I really paid a lot of attention.
The scar should not spread too much. The surgical scar area should not change color due to light either...
Apply the same wound ointment as much as possible when sending the child to daycare or going out.
I applied the Mephyfoam, wrapped it with a bandage, and took care of it.
It wasn't until much later that I went to the swimming pool, and I also put on Medifoam like that.
This is the appearance of the surgical scar after stitches at Ajou University.
The reason for general anesthesia is truly to allow the plastic surgeon to sew the scars with precision.
If performed under local anesthesia and sedation, the child will fall asleep, which may cause arm movement, and the surgery time is also shorter.
That's because I can't sew it as carefully...
This is a photo taken around 2020 when he was 4 years old, after nearly a year of care and bandaging, when I thought the scar looked okay.
I hoped that the surgical scar wouldn't widen significantly as the child grew.
And this is the scar of our second child, who is now 7 years old in 2023.
Even though the scar is visible... it doesn't stand out much in daily life.
If moles are not removed when they are young, they can become too large, requiring multiple surgeries.
I'm worried about having to undergo general anesthesia as a baby, but on the other hand, I'm also relieved that the surgery was completed in two stages.
Now, this surgical scar... if the child grows up and wants to,
I am planning to make it a bit lighter with a laser.
I left a review of my second child's congenital mole treatment.
If you are worried or concerned about your child's congenital mole,
Be sure to join the Congenital Mole Cafe to gain a lot of information.
If multiple surgeries are needed, it's better to do the final surgery carefully anyway.
I also recommend the Hanlim University in Dongtan, which does not perform general anesthesia for first-degree procedures.
As you know, since they are all famous professors, you need to make reservations in advance.
Therefore, if the child's mole darkens gradually and the lesion appears unfavorable
I strongly recommend that you quickly make reservations at a few places to set the surgery date.
Congenital moles are not treated for cosmetic purposes.
It is something done to save a child's life just in case.
Fortunately, the costs for the primary and secondary surgeries were not significant, and even the expenses for this were fully covered by the child's prenatal insurance.
They also performed surgery without significant costs.
I will end the review here.
Thank you for reading the long message.
I hope it will be helpful to some people.
