In traditional Korean medicine, the upward movement of water energy and the downward movement of fire energy are called "Suseung Hwagang." When the heat flow of Suseung Hwagang is well balanced, the head remains cool, and the hands and feet stay warm.

When stressed, blood circulation is blocked, causing the head, face, and upper chest to become hot and develop illness, while the lower stomach and uterus become cold and also develop illness. Lettuce is a food that helps promote the transformation of fire in the Five Elements theory, aiding in the balance of heat.

 

It is beneficial for people who get angry easily and have difficulty controlling their anger, acting as a sedative. When the stems or leaves are torn, a white exudate is released, which contains compounds called lactucarium, such as lactucerin, lactucine, and lactucic acid, known as BSL. These have calming and soothing effects, helping to calm anger and relax the mind. It is also helpful for people with sleep disorders, not by inducing drowsiness like sleeping pills, but by improving nerve recovery and elasticity, increasing concentration, and aiding in restoring the rhythm of nerves to promote better sleep.

 

If there is excessive heat on the scalp, it not only causes dryness and dandruff but also leads to itching and scalp inflammation. If the hair is not properly supported, hair loss becomes more severe, and even with hair transplantation, neglecting the heat can reduce the success rate of grafting.

 

It has a cold nature, so it not only reduces heat in the scalp but also helps to regulate the internal heat coming from the heart. It is said that lettuce was given to patients during surgery and that surgery was performed. This indicates that it also has analgesic effects. Lactucin is known to have sedative and analgesic properties and helps to soothe pain caused by inflammation. In addition, it is beneficial for cancer prevention and constipation.
