Do headaches increase in winter? Simple tips to get rid of headaches 😵

Why does it feel like I have more headaches specifically in winter?

Winter is cold because the temperature drops and the indoor and outdoor temperature differences are large.

*겨울에 두통이 늘어난다? 두통 없애는 간단한 요령 😵

Stress Management

Stress is the main culprit. Stress increases cortisol secretion, leading to muscle tension and blood vessel constriction, which can be the primary cause of headaches. Take some time to relax and do what you enjoy. Listening to your favorite music is recommended. Music is the only X drug approved by the country. Even while working, taking a moment to zone out or take deep breaths can help reduce stress and relax.

🔸️Caffeine intake regulation

Dilemma. I need to drink coffee to survive, but I also need to cut back for health reasons. Caffeine, when consumed in moderation, can help relieve headaches by dilating blood vessels, but excessive intake can cause dehydration or excessively constrict blood vessels, worsening headaches. Drinking only 1 to 2 cups of coffee a day is appropriate.

Maintaining the appropriate indoor temperature and humidity

Humidity is also important. During winter heating, indoor air becomes dry, causing the skin and mucous membranes to dry out, and blood vessels to constrict, which can lead to headaches. This occurs because blood circulation is not smooth, reducing oxygen supply to the brain. Keep indoor temperature between 18-22°C and humidity between 40-60%. Using a humidifier or hanging a wet towel are also effective methods. Especially, increasing humidity before sleep can prevent dryness in the nose and throat.

Adequate hydration

On cold days, less sweat is produced and less thirst is felt, leading to lower water intake. When the body's hydration is insufficient, blood becomes more concentrated, which can cause headaches. Water knows the answer. Maintain fluid balance by regularly drinking 1.5 to 2 liters of water daily.

Maintain a regular sleep pattern

During winter, the days become shorter, leading to irregular melatonin secretion. As a result, the body's circadian rhythm can be disrupted. Lack of sleep does not allow the brain to rest sufficiently, which can worsen tension headaches or migraines. It is important to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. To ensure restful sleep, keep the bedroom environment dark and quiet.

Keep your neck and head warm

Exposure to cold weather can cause blood vessels to constrict rapidly, leading to headaches. When going outside, wear a scarf and hat to maintain body temperature, and indoors, use warm blankets or electric heaters to keep your body warm. Especially, keeping the neck and shoulders warm helps relax tense muscles and is effective in preventing headaches.

Indoor ventilation

Staying in a confined space for a long time can lead to a decrease in oxygen levels and an increase in carbon dioxide, which may cause headaches. Open the windows 2-3 times a day for 10 minutes each to let in fresh air.

Reducing eye fatigue

During the winter months, indoor activities increase. Naturally, the time spent looking at screens also rises. When eye fatigue accumulates, it can lead to headaches. Practice the '20-20-20 rule': every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet (about 6 meters) away for 20 seconds. Massaging around the eyes with a warm towel is also effective in reducing fatigue.

Diet management

Avoid specific foods that can trigger headaches (such as cheese, chocolate, processed meats), and consume foods rich in magnesium. Magnesium helps to relax muscle tension. Add bananas, avocados, nuts, and green leafy vegetables to your diet. Additionally, eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, is beneficial for headache prevention.

Reducing light and noise

Bright lights and noise are major factors that worsen migraines. If the surroundings are too bright, adjust the lighting or wear earplugs to block out noise. When the headache is severe, lowering the lights and resting in a quiet environment can significantly improve the condition.
