Cough cough... Maybe it's because of the roller coaster-like temperatures, or perhaps people's stress levels are rising and their immune systems are weakening, or maybe it's because the Earth is struggling and viruses are gaining strength, but the sounds of coughing are loud around me.

 

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency warned that influenza, COVID-19, human metapneumovirus (HMPV), and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are all spreading simultaneously, putting Koreans' respiratory health on high alert.

 

The flu, which has severe symptoms and spreads easily, is classified as 'Type A,' and since the end of last year, two types of Type A have been circulating simultaneously. COVID-19 decreased last summer but has been surging again since the end of the year. HMPV, which caused outbreaks in China and India and drew global attention, has actually been occurring annually in our country as well, but recently it has been increasing rapidly. RSV, which affects infants and young children, and whooping cough, which children and adolescents are prone to, saw a major outbreak last year, and although the number of patients has decreased recently, we shouldn't be complacent. Recently, there has also been a surge in a 'pseudo-flu' that causes symptoms like fever, cough, or runny nose but without those symptoms, and the whole body feels as if it has been beaten.

 

Although not well known before the COVID-19 pandemic, respiratory viral illnesses such as influenza and colds are deadly diseases that claim the lives of many elderly people. Even healthy young individuals sometimes come close to the brink of death. When multiple diseases are prevalent like now, it is best to be cautious to avoid getting sick, as during the COVID-19 outbreak, and to prevent spreading the illness to others if you feel like you are infected.

 

However, there are still many people who cough on the subway without worrying about others, causing others to frown. When respiratory illnesses are prevalent, how about paying attention to hygiene and health care, considering the COVID-19 pandemic? Didn't we all learn that health is something we protect together?

 

▼To prevent respiratory diseases

 

Getting vaccinated: 'Vaccine conspiracy theories' are somewhat true. There are no medicines or vaccines without side effects. However, it is also true that what you gain far outweighs what you lose. Is there any reason to avoid the preventive measures that science has provided for diseases that were once unstoppable? And it's free...

 

Flu vaccines are recommended to be administered free of charge at health centers and designated medical institutions for the following groups: seniors aged 65 and over, pregnant women, children aged 6 months to 13 years, medical aid recipients, and vulnerable populations. Those who frequently suffer from the flu or have chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, or cardiovascular diseases should consult their primary care physician before getting vaccinated. COVID-19 vaccines are recommended to be administered free of charge to the following groups: seniors aged 65 and over, immunocompromised patients aged 12 and over, and residents or patients in infection-vulnerable facilities. If you fall into both categories, you can receive both vaccines at different times.

 

② Going out with a mask: It is recommended to wear a health mask if possible, and if it's too uncomfortable, wearing a regular mask is also good. Remember that during the COVID-19 pandemic, masks were a 'hygiene weapon' that people wanted to wear but couldn't. People with particularly pretty eyes can use the excuse of respiratory illness to wear one.

 

③Hand washing: Simply wetting your hands with water is actually more likely to spread viruses. You should lather with soap, wash thoroughly, and rinse. Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands, and it is also good etiquette not to shake hands with others.

 

④Others: After going out, dust off and come home, frequently ventilate indoors, maintain appropriate indoor humidity, etc. If you're not confident about your health, it's also good to avoid places with many people as much as possible. Smokers, take this opportunity to quit smoking!
