According to a joint research team composed of scientists from the University of Southern Denmark and the University of Copenhagen, carrots have been shown to improve blood sugar regulation and promote beneficial gut bacteria. The research team stated, "Thanks to these effects, carrots are expected to complement existing medical treatments for diabetes."

 

The research team discovered that physiologically active compounds in carrots can enhance the body's ability to regulate blood sugar levels and positively influence the composition of gut bacteria in experiments with mice. The team conducted studies to understand how nutrients found in starchy vegetables induce metabolic effects.

 

The research team used mice infected with diabetes for 16 weeks to investigate the effects of carrots. The team divided the experimental mice into two groups: one group was fed a diet containing 10% freeze-dried carrot powder, and the other group was fed a diet without carrots.

 

The research team analyzed the results using a glucose tolerance test and found that the carrot powder intake group showed improved blood sugar control. This indicates that bioactive compounds contained in carrots enhance the cells' ability to absorb glucose, thereby aiding in blood sugar regulation.

 

The research team explained, "Here, carrots promote good bacteria in the gut, that is, beneficial bacteria, which helped diabetic rats."

 

Professor Lars P. Christensen, an analytical chemistry professor at the Department of Physics, Chemistry, and Pharmacy at Southern Denmark University, stated, "We see carrots as a potential component of future dietary strategies for type 2 diabetes." He added, "This study showed that adding carrots to the diet alters the composition of the gut microbiota."

 

Experts stated, "Further research is needed to determine whether the results obtained from mouse experiments can also be applied to humans," and "We hope that this research can lead to improvements in existing diabetes medications." Carrots should be washed thoroughly and eaten whole raw or lightly cooked to preserve the beneficial compounds they contain.

 

The results of this study (Effect of carrot intake on glucose tolerance, microbiota, and gene expression in a type 2 diabetes mouse model) were published in the scientific journal ≪Clinical and Translational Science≫.
